Good morning from sunny Blufton Illinois. Third morning of our Rt.66 tour. We haven't gotten there yet, we are not going to the beginning in Chicago as I am not a city guy. We are going to start in Pontiac Illinois and just play it by ear from there. Got people in Utah and Nevada. Gonna go until we run out of interest or money!

I am envious, @Peter Renfro ! I remember back when I was able to do things like travel across the country, and just SEE more of America, and I loved doing that, and wish that I could do it , even one more last time.
Please post pictures of your trip as you go and see interesting things along the way !

I always wanted to do that,
even planned such a trip going west
on US 66. It just never panned out.
    Good luck, God speed and
I hope you enjoy the heck out of your trip.

I've followed route 66 from Oklahoma City west to California. Interstate 40 covers much of it. There are plenty of places where the original highway still exists along with museums and gift shops.

We followed quite a bit of 66 from Oklahoma City west a few years ago. Tucumcari was the most disappointing stop on the way. It was one of the most depressing and depressed places I've been. I hope they've spruced it up a bit since then.

The actual name drew me there......I mean, doesn't "Tucumcari" sound fun? Spoiler.....it's not.

I don't remember the names of most places we stopped along route 66, but I remember I liked Williams, Arizona. It's also one of the places where you turn to go to the Grand Canyon.

    Sounds like a great adventure.
Do you have certain destinations you especially want to see - state and national parks, bridges (I like those), museums?
    Enjoy it all!

The stretch of I-40 above was the last segment to be completed. Prior to that, old 66 had to be taken WAY up north and back down, through some particularly beautiful scenery. After separating from my wife, still attending UNLV in Vegas, my Mother was living with me, and asked me if I would take her to Albuquerque a few days, where old friends lived. 40 was not done yet, I chafed at the long added mileage, but marveled at what we saw! That trip, 1976, still brings back memories of Hackberry, Valentine, and Peach Springs, small forgotten towns!

Originally, Seligman was called "Prescott Junction", because it was the railroad stop on the Santa Fe mainline junction with the Prescott and Arizona Central Railway Company feeder line running to Prescott, in the Arizona Territory. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) had reached it in 1882. In 1886 it was renamed Seligman, after Jesse Seligman, one of the founders of J. & W. Seligman & Co. of New York, who helped finance the railroad lines in the area."

Also of great interest along that stretch of U.S. 66 is Grand Canyon Caverns, just east of Peach Springs.

Hey all! Carthage Mo. Sorry about no pictures, but campground internet really sucks. We have a pay as you go hotspot, but data is ridiculously expensive. Once I get home I will bury you.
Dragging a camper is not the way to do this. Can't just slam on the brakes and pull off the shoulder like you can with a car. We have been moving about 150 miles at a time getting a site, and exploring from there. A lot more miles, but much more effective.

I used to tour Route 66 the way it was intended to be toured, by hitchhiking.
