"Charlie Dunn (1898 – 1993) was probably the most famous boot maker in the world. He spent most of his working life in a modest little place called Capital Saddlery, in Austin, Texas.". . Source "Dunn’s intensely loyal clientele included such celebrities as Slim Pickens, Harry Belafonte, Gene Autry, Ernest Tubb, Mary Kay Place, Arnold Palmer, Peter Fonda and Carole King. Another satisfied customer was Jerry Jeff Walker...who wrote and recorded this song as a tribute to Dunn’s artistry and character.".
Not at all being irreverent, but what brilliant marketing...... The sign says: I will heel you. I will save your sole. I will even dye for you. Hesus (Jesus in Spanish) Shoe Repair.
Cobblers are hard to find in my area. Luckily, I found one who could repair my old Bass penny loafers which I've had for eons and wear like iron. I had split the back counter and he did a terrific job.
Joe--I'm getting concerned. Looks like you have removed your avatar and a couple of your forum "businesses" are closing. You aren't leaving us????
Joe sent me a message this morning that he will not be participating here, at least for the time being, because he also has threads in another forum that he maintains. The threads will still be here, and hopefully, Joe will miss us and come back again when he is able to do so. I know that we will all miss him, for sure !
I will miss Joe! He was so kind and called me Hurricane Faye. To think a hurricane would be named after me is a real compliment. I am lucky to have a boot repair close. He used to make boots and saddles, but moved to the city and now does boot and shoe repair in his daughters garage where he lives in the back. I think he is 90 now. His name is also Joe. I took in a pair of expensive high heel creme color boots to him and he says, "Faye, are you getting married? No, cowgirl like you would wear these girly things unless they were getting married." I assured Joe I wasn't getting married and bought them for a friends granddaughters wedding and got one heel stuck in between boards on the deck at the reception, damaging it. When he is gone, I guess I will have to make boot repair a DIY project. The glue fumes, even outside, make me sick.
@Yvonne Smith If you are in contact with him in the future, will you please tell him how much he is missed??
