I'm tired of looking at the boring ceiling in my kitchen from where I sit at my computer. I would like to add some thing to give it a little umphf before I repaint my cabinets this Spring. Anyone have any suggestions that I can consider?
Yup...I have a great suggestion Von.....take your computer and use it in another room, then you won't have to look at the kitchen ceiling... LOL>.I'm kidding....kinda...but without knowing the size and layout of your kitchen I can't think of what you could do with the ceiling. What about a P{ot holder..or a ceiling island..? or perhaps...change the lighting to something a little more unusual......? ceilings are a very difficult thing to change in kitchens..great if you don't cook very often and then they don't get dirty...PITA if you do cook, and they have to be regularly cleaned...
@Holly Saunders is right, it's difficult to make suggestions without knowing the size, shape, etc. of your kitchen. I'd love to bomb mine, it's tiny, and very nonfunctional. I love some of the newer light fixtures, and some aren't that expensive, while others can be handmade, which adds a nice dimension.
@Von Jones , I find that pretty hanging plants are always nice. If you only have a little light in your kitchen, get an ivy or other low light plant. If you get plenty of light you could have a small herb garden right in your kitchen. Growing plants always make me feel encouraged about 'things'. Try hanging them in such a way that you can raise or lower your plants as needed.
My kitchen's layout is galley like but not as narrow as seen in magazines and what I call a breakfast nook but probably was used as a storage or pantry area. @Holly. I was in another room but I found that I like looking out the window in the nook onto my backyard so I moved my computer there. A newer light fixture is probably what will make a difference. @Ina I. Wonder. I have very low natural light in the main kitchen area and I always have to switch the ceiling light on for adequate lighting. There is a nice window but any sunlight is blocked by the house next door. I could try indoor hanging plants that don't need a lot of light. Thanks Ladies.
@Von Jones Plants would be nice. I have a bamboo, but am thinking about getting some more. There are some good deals on them on Amazon, and I like the braided styles, as well. I collected for you some ideas that, if I'd be in your shoes, I would choose from, and some of which you may not be able to implement, based on your budget and kitchen layout; basically allowing you to look outside, but certainly something nice if possible to get you enjoying outdoor nature, or letting daylight/moonlight come in

@Carlota Clemens. Thank you for the photos. The country chic is (4th from the top) is similar to my style. The ceiling in the photo second to last caught my interest. I can probably scale it down a bit by using a lighter color tin tiles. I'll have to do some research on those.
Our kitchen is also drab and although it is lacking in decoration, I didn't have the inkling to have it repainted. Maybe I have some apprehensions with the worker. It is too difficult to find a good carpenter much more a house painter. Would you believe that our bathroom on the ground floor that needed retiling since 5 years ago remains in shambles? We have the budget for that, no problem, but we cannot find a good tiler. So maybe if we find a good house worker then our kitchen will have a facelift.
Our kitchen has a window above the sink (which I like), and then one of those small eating areas , as opposed to an actual dining room. Since Bobby loves to watch the television when he eats, we never eat in the dining area, and actually do not even have a table to eat at if we wanted to. I do not spend much time in the kitchen at all anymore, especially since there is not a table or chairs to sit down with, so making it look attractive is not important to me. The eating area does have a nice window, and if I had a small table there, I would probably eat there myself, or even use it just to sit and do crafts at the table. I like being able to look outside at the back yard. Right now, it is just kind of an extra storage area for whatever tools Bobby is using that he needs to keep inside the house, so we can't fit even a small table there, assuming that I found an affordable one. I do have some house plants there, and would probably add. More if there was a place for them, since they would get sunlight from the picture window.
My kitchen also has a nice size window above the sink, where I can look outside and see what's going on in my backyard. Directly next to the kitchen window is my 8 foot wide patio window, so I get a lot of light inside the kitchen. I installed track lighting in the ceiling of the kitchen area, so that gives the ceiling a nice look. I also never eat in the kitchen -- eat all my meals sitting down on the living room couch and watching TV while I eat. My dining area has an interesting ceiling. I have a ceiling fan above the table and bar stools. From the ceiling fan bottom I attached a sturdy bronze colored chain that attaches to a beautiful tiffany hanging lamp.
