I am just guessing here, @Chrissy Page ; but I think that what @Bonnie Thomas means is that you now have to order at least $49 to get free shipping, instead of the $25 or $35 that it was before.
Most places make you order at least $50 to get free shipping; so I do not think that Amazon is out of line with the new price. I hadn't noticed that they had changed, to be truthful, since we have Prime, and never worry about shipping costs.
We order enough from Amazon to make it well worth having the Prime, plus, my son Michael is also using our account to order, or watch movies. We just added his credit card to the ones that we use to buy from Amazon, and his address onto the approved shipping addresses.
So, whenever anyone is ordering, we just make sure that we use the correct card and address for shipping, and it works great for everyone.
Probably, you could do this same thing Chrissy, since your family also has an Amazon account, and you could just add yourself onto their account when yours expires if you don't want to keep your own.

Yes, think you're right Yvonne. Most places that I know it is $50.

Will do that, Yvonne....that's my plan for next year.

@Bonnie Thomas , seems like everything is going up....grrrrrrr!

Yes, they really need to take a good look at what they are doing with these increases, especially with technology the way it's going there are many alternatives for viewing programs. They will soon be obsolete and much sooner with people jumping ship because of the prices.

I've noticed that the 'free shipping' option on Walmart.com changes sometimes. It seems to decrease around the holidays, to $35, then increases again, to $50, which as @Yvonne mentioned, seems pretty standard. I've seen the price change on Amazon, too, but I'm not sure if it's just gone up as many things have, or if it fluctuates with the shopping seasons (such as Christmas and Back To School), and will again decrease for a certain time frame.

@Yvonne Smith Is there a decent amount of free programming on the Apple TV? I'm still undecided, but have been leaning toward Roku for a while now. I compared them a while ago and that seemed to have the most of what I'm interested in.

Truthfully, @Diane Lane , we do not watch a lot of what is on the Apple TV programming; but there are quite a few stations on there.
I don't know how well it compares to a Roku. The Roku might be a better option for you , since you do not have an iPad or iPhone .
One of the features of the Apple TV is called "AirPlay ", and it allows us to throw any webpage that we have on the iPad , up onto the television.
When we watch a movie from Amazon, we put it up on the TV using AirPlay , because Apple TV does not get Amazon Movies.

We do not watch most of the regular programs that come on each week, except for a very few of them. Bobby likes the singing/talent show programs, and I have started watching "Second Chance" with him on Fidays; but otherwise we do not watch enough of the regular programs to really use most of what is on the Apple TV, or any other similar device.
All of the movies on Apple TV have to either be bought or rented, and they are often a little higher-priced than the same movie on Amazon; so a Roku or Fire TV might be a better choice. If we decided to upgrade ours, we would probably get the Fire TV or Firestick rather than a newer Apple TV.

ComCast is one of the big cable providers here.

They are now knocking on doors trying to sell cable!

They were at my door the other evening, I was upstairs working and GS sent them packing.

I haven't had cable companies come to the door but get lots of stuff in the mail from them. In fact I posted a good deal I got today in another thread. The Roku one.

I never open my door anyway to anybody unless it's someone like the Plumber who I called.
I've heard too many instances of whoever was at the door forcing themselves in and then beating the owner and robbing them. My excuse is I can't open the door because of my dog and it's believable because Pickles is by the door barking so loudly that they probably can't even hear me. :)

Haha @Chrissy Page It's probably a good thing you've got Pickles. I've heard stories recently that knocking on the door is the actual first step, and if no one answers the door (most people I know don't answer, regardless of whether they're home and available), they either kick it in or go around to the back and kick that door in, assuming no one is home because no one answered. I guess they haven't considered the fact that the person inside is busy getting their gun and loading it and had no intention of answering the door.

I'm usually upstairs, and can sometimes look out the front window to see if it's someone I know at the door. I can also sometimes peek around the corner at the top of the stairs, which is usually where the cats are, if someone's at the door. I refuse to answer the door to strangers. My neighbors/friends know to let me know ahead of time via the phone or Facebook, or to yell my name.

Thanks @Yvonne Smith Amazon is a site I do rent movies from. I used to rent at least 1-2 of the lower priced ones from them, but they've made it more difficult to find the deals these days, and I don't have extra money for that right now anyway. It's definitely helpful to know that AppleTV doesn't support Amazon, because I would want that. I looked around yesterday and there seem to be a lot of different products on the market, other than the top few (roku, Chromestick, Fire, and AppleTV), but I'd definitely stick with a main product, since I'm not very techy and wouldn't want to have to troubleshoot issues on my own. I used to be able to throw the movies from my laptop to the TV, but can't do that right now, since the laptop's not working. I do love Apple products, but they're out of my price range, at least for now. I'm always hopeful for the future ;).

I just went this week to amazon.com too and noticed the price increase of free shipping. After I picked up my jaw after it dropped when I read the price increase I began shopping again.

When you have Amazon Prime, and you order something that is "Prime", then you have an option of free 2-day shipping.
However, there are several other shipping options that are possible.
If you want the item to come the next day, you can choose that and pay an additional shipping charge.
There is also an option for slower shipping which will give you a credit that can be used for books, music , or movie rental or purchase.
We usually want the purchased item right away and choose the 2-day free shipping; but when it is something that we do not need right away, then I will take the slower shipping and get the $1 credit for books, etc.

I have been saving up my credits, partly because I can't find it on my account anywhere that shows just how much credit I have accumulated, and partly because I just didn't have anything specific that I wanted to buy.
I usually get the more expensive books free through the kindle lending library; but if a book is not Prime, then you can't borrow it, either.

I just finished reading Rob Skiba's book "Babylon Rising, and the First Shall Be the Last", and it was very interesting. He quotes from the Book of Enoch and also Jasher (uncanonized Biblical texts), and I wanted to read more of those works myself .
Rob also has a book that brings together these books along with the Book of Genesis, and it was $10 to buy the kindle edition, and it was not Prime, so I could not borrow it.
I thought I would see if my credits worked; so I ordered the book, and sure enough-------- I got it for FREE ! !
I am seriously HAPPY now, and will use this more in the future.
I still haven't found how to see what credits I have; so I do not know if I have used them all, or if I have more left; but even so, it was great to get the book for free.

I finally cancelled my Amazon prime membership. It was due to be renewed on the 26th.

I only send stuff to the grandsons and I can use my daughter's or son's acct and just reimburse them. I hardly ever watched Amazon video so it was a waste of money for me.

I got fed up with their review policy after reading most got the item at a reduced price, since I pay full price I want to know if the product is worth it.

That was the straw that broke the camels back and finally gave me the push I needed to quit.
