So the weather has been nice to start doing chores outside. I have been sweeping my porch off more than usual because of the windy days (March) but I noticed that the raffia from my flower pots all over the porch. It pondered me because I thought it was because of the wind. These were my flower arrangements in the for Fall 2020. Well, now looky here..
I have bushes I keep forgetting to remove during the fall & winter months. When it's time to do yard work in the spring, I usually have one of those in there. I just don't have the heart to destroy it. One of these years I'll get out there when it's not occupied. So do you know what type of bird it is? Have you seen it?
Mom and Pop take turns I think. As soon as I step out of the door they fly from the nest in the opposite direction. That will change once the peeps hatch. ***It's feedin' time!*** You better move out of the way.
I believe Robins. I've dealt with this three consecutive years until I found a birdhouse and put there. No problem then but I took it down during the Fall. Big mistake, thinking it was okay. The peeps are so noisy when hungry. It seems like every 15 or 20 minutes all of their heads were bobbing in the nest 5 or 6 of them. I watched a couple of them as they were learning (do birds learn?) how to fly. That was funny. I found myself rooting them on.
@John Brunner. I removed the nest when it's empty. There's three places no four where I found nests -- In the front on the corner of the gutter and perched as seen on both sides of the porch and then inside a honeysuckle tree/bush in the backyard.
I was gonna ask about the noise level. I bet it echoes a lot from up there. I had the same thing in my last house...a porch overhand right at the front door. I love birds, but there are times I wish some of them would just shut up...especially the sparrows. They're starting to wake me up long before I'm ready to get out of bed. Regarding timing of houses...there is a guy not far from me who is a purple martin landlord. These birds only exist east of the Mississippi with the help of humans putting up houses. I've attended his annual open houses. He says that erecting houses at the end of the season is a good idea because the birds will note the location during their annual migration in the winter, and will return to those spots in the spring. I wonder if other birds (like your robins) are the same. Or perhaps taking down the house makes them think it's not a permanent [safe] thing.
I have a nest here I remove at the end of each season. It's built on top of the bend in a downspout, right under an eave. And every year it gets built again. I finally put some screen inside the lid of my propane tank so birds stop getting through the vents and building nests in there. I doubt that it's safe, and they get disturbed when the tank is refilled.
That's the strange thing they never nested in the birdhouse and that's what I wanted so the bird pooping would stop . But they did return ...
I believe that putting something in place where they build there nest prevents the rebuild. I didn't have a problem when it was in the honeysuckle. It seems more natural to me not an annoyance.
Okay, today I found half of an egg shell this morning. Then I saw mama/papa bird hovering over the nest in the feeding position. Sooo ... I took a peep.
This is the first pic that I've had a chance to see them after hatching. The first time was when they were chirping for food.
