I had the greatest neighbors ever! When my husband died, they "adopted" me. They did all kinds of things for me and always watched out for my safety. I was sorry to move.

Back in the 70's in Michigan, we had the proverbial neighbor-from-hell. He had a beef going with everyone in the neighborhood. Once we were away for a week on vacation and someone spraypainted obscenities on the side of his house that faced ours.

He told the police he had seen us do it. The officer pointed out that we had been out of town for days (the police liked people to let them know if you were going to be gone so they could keep an eye on your house). So he changed his story to saying we had paid someone to do it. Police didn't buy that, either. They told us that the list of possible suspects encompassed half the town....LOL. I could go on at length about the stuff he did, but let's just say he was one miserable human being....

To have good neighbors, it helps to BE a good neighbor.

Then again, there are apartment neighbors that, before moving into the apartment, had a house and had to sell it. These kind of neighbors aren't exactly the most friendliest neighbors, because now, instead of living in their nice house, they now have to live in a much smaller apartment.

And, of course, in this "day and age" of crime, many, many people are very skeptical of being overly friendly.

I live at the end of this right-of-way with 2 other families. Actually, they are brothers and live cross the gravel drive from each other. I have a tractor and help them with stuff that's just easier to do with a tractor. It's a real benefit when trees fall across our road. So I spent another 5 hours working on my firewood storage and came inside to get changed, and I hear lawn mowers outside. The two of them brought their zero turn mowers over and were cutting my yard!

My "yard" is over 7 acres, and their zero turns cut nicer and way faster than my tractor does. I went out and thanked them, and then apologized for having to bail. I was on a mission to drive an hour away to a Greek restaurant to have a decent meal, and when I got back a big chunk of my grass was cut for me.

    Such good people...

What the Bible says about your neighbor, is what I believe!

Do not be a slanderer among people, and do not stand up against the life of your neighbor. Do not hate your brother in your heart, but reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him.

Lots of wisdom in that. We never know why people are the way they are. We can either drive them deeper into their unhappy state by being barking dogs, or we can offer them a way out of it.

Sometimes people can hint at what's happened to them in the past. And, unfortunately, just like an many alcoholics, they don't want help. Simply can't help those that refuse help. There are many people that have problems that don't want/refuse help.

Compassion can only go so far.

I am binge-watching a series called "Fear Thy Neighbor" which is all about bad neighbor relations that usually result in murder. Many of them involve people who are psychiatrists, lawyers, doctors, and other accomplished people who just go nuts over bad neighbor relationships. Usually, it begins with one neighbor making demands of the other, sometimes over something as simple as not liking the plants that the neighbors planted on their property or not making repairs to the property expected by the neighbor, but they may also involve things like property line disputes, pets, kids, or noise. Most often, it's the busy-body neighbor who ends up murdering the neighbor who doesn't do what he or she expects them to do, but sometimes the other neighbor reacts to the complaints through murder. In every case that I have seen so far, the novel concept of minding one's own business would have prevented everything.

You never know how you may have affected someone. The last link in the chain is not necessarily the most important one.

If my words have had a positive affect on somebody, I gotta think that person has already heard similar words come from the mouths of others, and I just happened to be Mr. Right Place/Right Time.

The ones who live far away, like mine, are the best.

Just to follow up on this (as I posted elsewhere)...

One of the guys had a pile of gravel delivered, so I took my tractor over and built him a parking area 4 cars wide off of his driveway, then hauled the rest to the far end of his driveway for storage. When I finished he and his brother drove their zero turns to my place and finished cutting my grass.

I've been fortunate in my life that the majority of my neighbors have been like this. I owned a house for over 30 years right up the road from where I grew up. When I turned 50, my neighbors threw me a block party. In attendance was a woman I delivered the paper to when I was 12 years old.

Well, in general, I'm a friendly dude. But, when I tell someone something, that is going to help them, and I get a "mind your own business. We don't want to be friends with you or like you", it doesn't make me real happy. Especially when I know that wife and I have not done a thing to have that said to us.

My closest neighbor here is also my best friend, rarely a day goes by we do not interact in some way, we also have a neighborhood group that helps and checks on those in it usually 2 calls a day just to see of anyone needs anything and are ok, we are rural cattle ranching types with a common interests, I have no real desire to be with city dwellers they were never like this, so anything from pick me up something at the store to fencing repairs we help everyone in our group the latest was a friend whom had a cow in another pasture that had he just had back surgery so we made a couple of calls and got 4-5 helpers to get it home in a very short time frame, we look after each and every one in our group with many having keys to others places for emergency use, even mowing friends yards when they were not feeling well, you don't respond to a call or 2 you get a visit to check on you to see if all is ok. So per topic yes I do like my neighbors. We do have a nosey one that literally seems to know all and about every truck that drives by and who it is, she is the best! Not much gets past her. Also her son works the gates at the local rodeo and gets us tickets free, need any help, a place to fish, hunt, shoot just a call and you got it.

Totally, very cool! (in red above). Wife and I do like people like that. Actually, wife and I could live in a very small town, without a problem. We are simply friendly and that's what small towns are all about. Unfortunately, small towns don't have apartment complexes, so..........
