My hearing has been iffy for a number of years, and recently has become a significant issue. And, of course, with COVID, lots of fast food locations have drive thru ordering only. Add in the fact that those ordering systems are often on the same lever as two tin cans and a string.

On a day to day basis, we don't use fast food very often, but when we are on a road trip, with my SO's little yapper, fast food is almost our only option. Tried to go to KFC last night, and the drive thru ordering experience was an ordeal.

    Any suggestions?

I've always had trouble ordering from drive-throughs, even when my hearing was good. So I've avoided them. But that's hard to do now. The problem for me comes when they ask you a question for clarification. Maybe with practice, at the same place, having the precise order ready with every anticipated question answered, would help.

Yes I have one in the right ear and a Cochlear Implant to the left ear. I am still profoundly deaf.
How about ordering your food on line? TRY GRUB HUB or DOOR DASH

    This would be me.

I once installed a CB in my truck (this was over 30 years ago), and I could not understand what anyone was saying, so I took it out. It's like trying to decipher the lyrics to songs. "There's the bathroom on the right."

Another thing that makes it worse these days is the person on the other end is wearing a mask.

    @Beth Gallagher

This one is a convolution itself. The original lyrics were:

"There's a Bad Moon on the Rise", Credance Clearwater Revival.

The absolute BEST is from Elton John's "Lucy's in the Sky With Diamonds", the actual line was "the girl with kaleidoscope eyes".....my wife was positive they were saying, "The Girl with Colitis Goes By".........

Her brother was seriously ill with ulcerative colitis, and it was a daily topic. He died from complications at age 25, on his birthday.

I haven't tried that, but sounds like a good solution. Thanks!

Yes very hard to hear ordering food with outside noise. Good or bad hearing. Another problem is everywhere you go the place plays music that is too loud and makes hearing even harder. There again good or bad hearing still an issue.
Music is played to keep employees motivated and to intice customers. I like ZZ Top, but blaring in my better ear at 7:30 in the morning while cursing because once again Walmart is out if something I need - very frustrating:cool:

I always try to look on the bright side.

I've been wearing Widex aids for a few years now, and there is one thing that I like about them.
When I get what appears to be a scam call, (usually they speak in a very pronounced accent), I say "I'm sorry, I have hearing loss and can't hear very well. Will you start again, speak very slowly and clearly so I can understand." If its a legit call, they will do that, but if its a scam, they usually hand up.

This way, I have avoided a lot of scammers, because they get frustrated and do not continue the call and never call back, so I guess they write me off their list. Works every time.

For those that have, and use, hearing aids, do they/have they ever malfunctioned?

In early 2019, we bought me a set of electronic hearing aids for $538. They each have an on/off switch, five different programs to hear with and volume control. And, they were rechargeable! Came with clear tubes and hearing cones. I didn't use them nearly as much as I should have.

In Nov. 2019, I had to send them back to the company, because the right hearing aid was malfunctioning. It cost us $104 for repair. Both worked fine now. Anyway, the last couple of weeks I've noticed a definitely decline in my hearing, so, I decided to start wearing them again. Now the left hearing aid is malfunctioning. Don't hear the "beep/beeps" each time I change the hearing program. So, shipping back to the company for a repair and another $104. But, when they both work, they really, really work good.

I was at a drive-thru the other day, and the woman in front of me was placing her order and pointing to the menu board, as though that was gonna help.

I couldn't get my phone out in time before she holstered her weapon.
