Could never find the the circumstances of this photo. I just like the mischievous expression on his face.

Forecourt Ceremony held on Friday, November 14, 1930

Raoul Walsh was the first film director to have his imprints taken for the Chinese Theatre Forecourt, and this says a good deal about his stature among film personalities. An actor originally, Walsh had a long career as a director, which generated some signifigant films. His ceremony was the the first to be connected to a film playing at the Chinese, in this case, Walsh's film The Big Trail, which had its World Premiere at the theatre on October 2, 1930.

    In Old Arizona (1929)

    Synopsis by Hal Erickson
"Warner Baxter, sporting a black mustache and a musical-comedy Mexican accent, stars as the Cisco Kid, the "Robin Hood of the Old West" created by O. Henry".

"Edmund Lowe co-stars as Cisco's "friendly enemy" Sgt. Mickey Dunne, the role that was originally to have gone to Raoul Walsh. Both men are madly in love with dusky beauty Tonia Maria (Dorothy Burgess), and in fact Cisco is so "far gone" that he composes a song in the girl's honor (actually, "My Tonia", first heard during the opening credits, was written by Fox studio tunesmiths Lew Brown, B.G. DeSylva and Ray Henderson)".

"Alas, Tonia ends up betraying Cisco to Sgt. Burke. But the crafty, cold-blooded Cisco arranges for Tonia to be killed in the trap set for him (this plot resolution is faithful to O. Henry's original conception of the Cisco Kid, who wasn't really meant to be a 'good guy')".

No, this is not a photo taken on the set of a movie directed by Mr. Walsh. It is a photo of his cameo appearance in the 1949 musical comedy It's a Great Feeling, starring Doris Day, Dennis Morgan, and Jack Carson. (There were numerous cameo appearances of others in that movie.)

[IMG] That’s director Raoul Walsh inspecting a miniature for one of his They Drive By Night sets in 1940. Note foliage and the little swimming pool. This would eventually became the home of Ida Lupino and ill-fated husband Alan Hale in the film, an impressive set to have been built wholly within the confines of a soundstage at Warners. Excellent movie too, and it’s on DVD.

"The Stewart Bell Jr. Archives at Handley High School shared this photo of Winchester/Frederick County Red Cross volunteers in Hollywood, California, in July 1942. At the Warner Bros studio during filming of “Gentleman Jim” (the true-life story of boxer James J. Corbett) are actor Errol Flynn (center in period costume) and director Raoul Walsh (third from right with the eye patch). If you know the identity of the local people visiting Hollywood, call the archives at 540-662-9041, ext. 17, or email archives@handleyregional.org".
