Over the course of 77 years I had a variety of pets like the common pet store finds like hamsters, rabbits, chameleons, frogs, & Turtles. But there were some strange and usual pets like prairie dogs, flying squirrels and even a cotton-top marmoset. I've had a variety of indoor and outdoor Birds like chickens, guinea fowl, parakeets, canaries & the European Goldfinch. The best singing bird I've ever owned with one called the mule, it was a cross between two very good singing birds the canary and European Goldfinch. It was amazing. What different pet or animal did you have? Any story to go with it?
Nothing really unusual; we had plenty of dogs and cats over the years. My mother loved parakeets so we had a few of those. Also lots of farm animals; the baby goats were the cutest things ever.
I always wanted a baby goat, I don't know anything about there care that would have been the first thing I had to do is learn about them and build them the appropriate shelter. I've seen the dwarf goats they're really cute.
I just remembered that my dad "horse-traded" for a Shetland pony when I was about 6 years old. I was thrilled but the pony was a biter, so we didn't have him for long. We had several other horses as well, and a jenny named Sadie.
Going to seem like deja vu I always wanted a Shetland pony also I saw one when I was younger and fell in love with them.
My dad loved horses so we had several. His favorite was a dappled gray Tennessee Walking Horse named Sugar.
As a child, we had dogs, cats, raccoons, a fox, and a skunk, plus horses, and farm animals. Afterward, I had a parakeet for a couple of years until my cat ate him, and I had a hamster while I was living in a townhouse where I couldn't have a cat. Since then, I have had cats.
I had OSCAR ---a turtle that lived in my back yard. Never could train him to do tricks like roll over.
Was the skunk de-scented? I always like foxes, a few of the dogs that I've had as pets I picked because they resembled a Fox.
I had the usual array of dogs, cats, gerbils, hamsters, fish, parakeets, chickens, a duck and two house bunnies. I got a de-scented skunk for my 12th birthday. That's what I had been asking for and that's what I got. She was an "interesting" pet and somewhat affectionate.
@Tony Page, no the skunk was not de-scented. We raised it from the time that it was a kit, but it was never kept in a cage but was free to go whenever it wanted to. It was not a pet in the sense that we could treat it like a cat or dog, but it would come up to us and we could pet it. As long as we were slow about it, we could pick it up, while it was young. As it grew older, it became less tame but she lived her life in our barnyard, even digging a hole in our side yard (which we didn't use much) to raise her own family. Even when it was older, it would take food out of my hand, and it never sprayed around the house. The dogs were used to the skunk and the skunk was used to the dogs, so there wasn't even a problem there. They pretty much ignored one another. The fox was an excellent pet for a year and a half. Very playful and very tame, but she grew wilder as she grew older, which is the way it was supposed to be. I had a couple of raccoons, and they were a lot of fun too. Neither the fox nor the raccoons killed any of our chickens, although they may have stolen an egg or two. The raccoons were very cat-like, although the cats weren't too crazy about the coons.
For animal lover like me these are phenomenal stories. The closest I came to that is a squirrel that lived in my yard it would eat out of my hand. I did have flying squirrels they lived in a pen, I did train them to look for food in my shirt pockets. They would walk up my arm into my pockets find the food and then run back into the pen.
I miss having chickens for the fresh eggs there's just nothing like them. Unfortunately the township where I live put codes in that make it difficult to have chickens again. I thought of getting a skunk when I was younger I never had the opportunity.
Over the years I’ve had three dogs. I didn’t choose any of them but were brought in by grandkids and I didn’t have the heart to turn them down. Had a red poodle, a basset hound, and a wrinkles dog, a Shar Pey. I’ve never had a cat. I’m too old to take care of a pet now so will fill my bird feeders and watch who comes to dinner.
We had the typical dogs, cats, fish, turtles, chameleons, hamsters, parakeets, etc. I had (4) 10 gallon aquariums for the longest time, but nothing too exotic in them. That's when you could buy neon tetras 10/$1 rather than the $2 each they cost at one point. When I was married, my ex had a cockatiel and a couple of parrots (Blue Front Amazon and Mexican Red Head.)
