Would you believe this from Wikipedia... Rube Goldberg wrote the first feature film for the pre-Curly Howard version of The Three Stooges called Soup to Nuts, which was released in 1930 and starred Ted Healy. The film featured his machines and included cameos of Rube himself. I'm a Shemp fan, myself.
Probably pretty politically-incorrect today, but this is for those who really need a lot of nicotine:
I knew I was officially "old" when fresh college grads at work flatly accused me of lying when I told them that people used to be able to smoke at their desks and walking around the halls.
Not to mention in the doctor’s office and in hospitals. Chances were that the doctor would have one with ya.
I've been on on the front line of two horrendous periods in this nation's history: -I managed a gas station during Odd/Even -I managed a large staff of buyers (some smokers/some not) when smoking in office buildings was banned I never want to go through either one of those again.
I watch "Columbo" once in a while and it is funny to see him walk into someone's mansion, or an office, or a gov't building smoking his cigar, dropping ashes all over, haha. It all used to be normal, and even in doctor's waiting rooms too, as someone above already mentioned. I was in a motorcycle accident in June 1972 and was in the hospital for a week (bruised kidney). There were ashtrays in every room, everybody's smoking, lol.
