The wind warning is in place until Wednesday, but it seems to be less windy here now. I don't know about Palmer.
@John Brunner i hope your not stranded on that highway ! What a nightmare that is. Do not knowif you even live close by, but thought of you when I saw it.
Forecast for tomorrow is for 4 more inches of snow. Got some 7 inches on NYE day/night. Super glad to see the moisture, but really had to look hard for the AT (All Terrain) tires we want and have on our Durango currently. The name of them changed from Goodyear Wrangler to Goodyear Adventure. But, look out when March/April gets here.............those two months can really spell "SNOW".
Just got back from shopping. We found all the refrigerator cases and freezers empty, so we figured all had been lost. When we asked at the register about it, we were told the store was running on generators and there wasn't enough power available from them to run everything, so all that was moved into refrigerator trucks and stored there until power became reliable. Our generator certainly made our 12+ hours without electricity more enjoyable--almost normal. The local stores are all posting on Facebook that they are sold out of generators. The time to buy generators is when you don't need them, as there will be none available when they are actually needed.
The damp, rain and fog of late has been replace by cold (i.e.temps below 20° at night) with snow in the forecast by the weekend. With the absence of wind and rain, I was looking forward to doing some aerial photography today but prevailing low temps would kill the drone's batteries shortly after it would get up in the air.
There were so many cars wrecked and abandoned out there. I am so glad I didn't even try to make my early AM doctor appointment...that's when the really heavy stuff hit. It is insane.
So my neighbor called me this morning to get out my tractor...he got his chain saw started and was told by his nephew (who tried to physically get to us yesterday) that the top half of our right-of-way only had light stuff downed and the heavy stuff was just at our end. So I drove up the driveway and the two of us started hacking our way out. The poor guy has 2 really bad knees (they don't point straight forward) so it was slow going. And I had to clear out the snow along the way before I could lift & push the trees...I don't have chains for my tractor tires and it's really only meant to carry mulch around. I had the roll bar up and the seat belt on because it was kinda sliding back & forth and the weight of the stuff I was lifting made it tilt funny. Then we heard the sound of the guy we called yesterday to help, clearing stuff towards us from the main road. Initially, I couldn't see him or his equipment through the felled stuff: Then we saw the trees start to shake. He brought one of these: I had never heard of Takeuchi. They are little tanks...with rubber treads. We could have done it ourselves...there was only one sizeable tree across the road, and the rest were just a few inches in diameter...but it would have taken hours. The Takeuchi took the larger tree out in no time flat...just pressed the bucket down on top of it (since it was suspended between the banks), split it in half and pushed the pieces off into the woods. Even with all this, we're luckier than a lot of people. There are still road closings, and lots of folks are in for a several day power outage. Our electric co-op went scorched-earth around the power lines some years ago when there was a really bad wind event (¡El Derecho!), and they upgraded the infrastructure for the fiber internet cable they ran last year, so it's even more reliable than it was before. As of now, they're calling for another 3" on Thursday night. But they had only been calling for 1.5" right up until the day before we got this foot of snow, so I guess 2 feet is on its way.
Most of the snow here melted today, but it is supposed to start freezing again, with ice storms by tomorrow night and into Thursday, along with more snow after the freezing rain. I just ordered more groceries for tomorrow morning before the weather gets bad again, and hopefully we do not get everything closed down from the freezing rain and then snow. That is what overloads the tree branches and brings down the limbs and sometimes the whole trees like is happening to @John Brunner .
