I played trumpet from the age of 9 until I was in my 30s...not very well, but I enjoyed it. I was reading about these guys, and the woman (Shaye Cohn) is a classically trained pianist and the granddaughter of Al Cohn, who played sax in Woody Herman's band. Apparently she burned out on "playing the same 4 measures over and over, seeking perfection." At some point these guys were crashed in an abandoned building in New Orleans and there were a bunch of old instruments laying around (I guess the same way you would find picks and lanterns in abandoned mining towns...New Orleans style.) She picked up a trumpet and "had fun trying to figure out how to play scales on it." The rest, as they say, is history. Her natural ability to play coronet like this makes me jealous, but I love her enthusiasm. Every song seems to make her happy...and she's a great player. She also orchestrates their tunes.
I agree you used the right word Naturals, there are those people who just can play an instrument without formal training. I have a friend who plays a wonderful piano " by ear".( can get a stiff neck that way) I really really like New Orleans style music, Dixieland.
1,000,000 Thumbs-Up! I'll put jazz as a close second. Both lend themselves to the improvisation and self-expression that makes for real music from the soul.
Jazz has no boundaries, masterpieces are made when one artist pushes another and they play Above & Beyond there norm, sometimes the crowd pushes them whatever their motivation the music that is generated is unique and extraordinary.
I was in something of a funk today after a couple of days of steady rain and not seeing friends for awhile due to our present Virus restrictions. Also the news of what an awful mess our nation is in has finally thrust me into a nostalgic longing for a time when this song hit me reminding me of what it once was like. It's considered propaganda today, but to so many who lived back in the day when America was really appreciated, it evokes memories of sweeter times. Our restrictions were lifted this afternoon, so that was a plus and listening to Sinatra perform at the White House has really made my day.
I recall "Groovin'" but not that tune...but I don't think I've got a Young Rascals LP in my collection.
