Don't know if anyone here has had moving, as in relocation, problems before. A person can hire an excellent moving company and still have some, not a lot, but some, breakage done. Or, live somewhere where a moving company can't put a long trailer into. We had that before, so the company used a 5-ton truck to load everything, take back to their yard and load everything on the 5-ton into the long trailer. But, our problem is this..........people not necessarily trusting us. What I mean by that is, there are people that move to a city/town and want to change that city/town. That's definitely not us, but there are those that wonder. There are those that have to take a job-transfer or hit the unemployment office line (computer/online today). Those that love both their job and where they live, but have to take the transfer to a different state/city in order to keep their job and seniority. We've heard of the "changing the area" by newcomers before, especially where we live now. There are certain areas of certain states where residents really don't want any newcomers to move to. They've seen newcomers move in and, somehow/someway change what is there. Thoughts?
I think that this is pretty common everywhere. People who grew up in an area, especially a smaller sized town, really notice the difference when new people start coming in. Many times, those new people do move in with the idea of changing the things they don’t like, instead of just moving somewhere that they do like. I grew up in a small town in northern Idaho, everything was pretty safe back then, and we even rode our horses right through town on occasion, and no one cared. Then, the Californians discovered Sandpoint, which has an awesome lake for summer fun, and a ski resort for the winter people, and was a decently priced area to live in back then. Those people moved into the country, and then complained that their neighbors had “smelly livestock”, and they wanted a newer, wider street through town, and a bypass for travelers, and on and on it went. There is nothing to do about it. People can move anywhere that they want and can afford to move, and the people who live there just have to deal with it.
Sort of weird, Yvonne, but the very same thing happened to the small town of Norco, California. I went to a Roping School there and would shop at Norco Ranch Outfitters. Last time we were in Norco, 2001, we seen people from Orange and L.A. County living there. At a cafe we had breakfast at, numerous young folks with tattoos/body piercings were in there. This "look" was not Norco in any way. Actually, there was an article in Western Horseman, numerous years ago, calling Norco "Horse Town U.S.A." Newcomers wanted to turn the dirt trail, that went up and down Main Street in front of houses, into a sidewalk for skateboards. Only people on horseback would use it. Then, the newcomers stared to complain about the smell. Don't know how Norco is today, but it has grown. One member of a relocation forum told me, "Yes, I live in Norco and have always loved it here, but today and the past 20 years, the biggest problem is the people moving here." True, Yvonne, people can move wherever they want to, but when newcomers bring their "big-city" stuff/ideas, that's when trouble begins. And, when local young folks like what "big-city" newcomers look like/act like and they like it, again, trouble starts. We've seen it happen right where we live. Progress is going to happen, but when strip clubs, porn theaters, stores selling adult stuff and so on, start building............old/senior residents go, "where did we go wrong?" A walk-in theater that my wife had her first date in, is now a porn theater. She was totally shocked when we visited the city.
IOW, packing up isn't so easy, but calling a moving company is. It's when people get the cost of having things moved, they can say "what???" and then realize that they either haven't got rid of enough or need to get rid of some things period. We paid a nice amount of money, to a major moving company, to have our stuff moved from northeastern Florida to northern Colorado. Just like the amount of money we paid to have a moving company move our stuff from Colorado to North Carolina. And now we will be doing that again! But, some things in life are simply a necessity to try to find that great word, "happiness". But, what is really a disappointment, is when people move back to a state/area they once liked, but then find out how much it has changed, hoping the change will stop, but it doesn't............the change gets worse. It's very funny how we all live in America, but how there are those that totally dislike one state or another or many. As for myself, I think, in part, this is due to newcomers or, as stated before, those that like what others look like from other states. IOW, Denver, Colorado isn't called "Colorado's version of Los Angeles" for nothing.
Likes and dislikes vary by individual. In every state I've lived in, there were parts of that state that I disliked. For example, I grew up in Michigan but disliked the southern half of the Lower Peninsula. In California, I disliked Los Angeles and San Francisco. In Texas, I disliked Houston and Dallas, and in Maine, I dislike Portland and the surrounding southern part of the state. Politically, I disliked pretty much everything about California, although that would be a damned nice state if they kicked out about half the people who currently live there, and pretty much everyone involved in the state and city governments. Politically, there are things I love and things I hate about Texas, and the politics in Maine pretty much suck on a statewide basis.
Well, Ken, I'm not talking here about politics/government. What I'm talking about is newcomers that want to change the looks/feel of an area to suit them. Or, some existing residents who like, from watching tv or seeing newcomers, what folks look like/act like, in other states. I've not only heard complaining done in Wyoming, but also now in Montana. Sometimes we will still hear complaining done here in Colorado, from mainly long-time senior residents, but that has calmed down since we moved here. But, talk to most senor residents here, and they will give a person a mouth-full of complaints about the changes they seen happen here.
People from Massachusetts who buy land in Maine do that, which is why they are often referred to as Mass-holes, so much so that people who come from other states to do that are also called Mass-holes.
I moved here from northern Virginia (land of the libs), and made sure folks knew that I came here to be part of the community and not to change it. I’ve been here 12 years and hate outsiders who want to change things.
@Cody Fousnaugh - do not take this wrongly, but do you intend to move everytime the place or people around you do not meet your expectations? Apears you move a lot. The only reason we are moving from Tx to Ks is saving money and because of the opportunity offered to us by family member.
Well, Hedi, we have moved for different reasons. Wife had no problem, after we married, leaving her family in So California and moving to Colorado. She did, but didn't get along with them. Reason for leaving Colorado was due to a fall in ice/snow in front of our house. We never gave it a thought that either of us could fall anywhere we live. Due to a nice lake, and milder winter, in North Carolina, we moved there. She got a job, but got laid off 10 months later. After finding out about the Nuclear Power Plant on the one of the lake, she no longer wanted to live where we were. So, we drove down to Jacksonville, FL, liked what we saw (at the time) and moved there. Didn't realize that we'd end up, after 10 1/2 years there, missing rodeo, mountains, wildlife and freshwater lakes..........but we sure did. Had really no idea that the Front Range of Colorado had changed so much and a whole lot more than we liked. Been back here three years now and, due to the Pandemic or whatever, the entire area is extremely unfriendly. Like many folks, we do have certain expectations of where we move to. Why not? We want friends, but absolutely nobody where we live is the slight be interested in what we like. So many young people here look like that moved here directly from Los Angeles. Looks, attitudes, whatever. We simply don't like it. And, just why should anyone continue living someplace they don't like anymore?? IOW, Hedi, we know there is no "Utopia" for us out there, but that sure doesn't mean that we can't find close to it. If the area we live in, like Wyoming, was more into horses, rodeo, farming/ranching/livestock, we might stay. But, it most definitely isn't. It has changed THAT much!!
Also, Hedi, there is a skateboard park in the city we live in, but not in the city we are possibly looking at to move to. A skateboard park isn't the same as a skating rink. Seeing young kids riding skateboards definitely reminds me of big cities like Denver or Los Angeles.
Well, I have an App of the city/area we are considering and planning a short trip to, but I just read that in 2019, this very small city started a Pride Parade and they are having a (name of city) Supports LGBTQ+ Breakfast this Sunday at a local Perkins Restuarant. Now, this city is in Wyoming and we would've never guessed they would have a community like this. This isn't a big city like Casper or Cheyenne. The guy that started this support group is married to another man. This could be a deal-breaker for a move, let alone a visit, for us. We are Christians and we know what the Bible states about this.
Just what the heck is there to laugh about??? We didn't know this before. We go by what the Bible says about GLBTQ+, NOT by what some of the U.S. population says. So, now we are going to look at Cody, Wyoming, which is affectionately known as "Rodeo Capital of the World". I know, I know, there are those that either dislike rodeo or have absolutely no interest in it, but............that sure isn't us!!
