Fridays are always slow here, but today I've had to check to be sure the phones were working. I had one call, and that was a half hour before the doors were opened, as I always come in early in case someone left a mess. We have a couple of volunteers, more talented than I am, who are putting together some of the shelving, but there have been no drop-in visits.
That's interesting. When I was in AA and other 12 Step stuff, Fridays were busy because folks knew they needed to occupy themselves heading into the weekend. Do you all do evening stuff?
We have occasional evening and weekend events or get-togethers, and we provide space for a variety of recovery programs that are not affiliated with Pir2Peer, such as AA, CoDA, SMART Recovery, and others, and they are usually at night or on Saturdays. During particularly difficult seasons, such as New Year's Eve, we're open 24 hours. Originally, we had regular Saturday schedules, but pretty much no one came. Significant in this is that our core mission is not to provide a place for people in recovery to hang out, although we do that, but to provide assistance with employment, housing, and other things necessary for a productive life, as well as guiding people through the path of finding an appropriate recovery program. This is part of recovery coaching and, while we could obtain information on a Saturday, we'd pretty much have to make the contacts during working hours.
