Serve the prepared Sloppy Joe mixture on toasted burger buns. Ingredients 1 small onion, finely chopped 1/2 small green bell pepper, seeded and finely diced 1 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp yellow mustard 1/4 Cup water 1 Tbsp brown sugar 15 oz can tomato sauce 1 lb lean ground beef 1 Tbsp oil ½ tsp salt ¼ tsp ground black pepper 3 garlic cloves, minced 4 hamburger buns, toasted if desired Instructions In a bowl, combine the Worcestershire sauce, mustard, water, brown sugar, and tomato sauce. Place a large skillet over medium/high heat. Add oil and ground beef. Saute the beef until cooked through and longer pink, breaking it up with a spatula. Drain grease if necessary. Season with salt and pepper and add in the diced peppers and onion. Cook another 5 minutes until the veggies are tender and beef is browned. Add the minced garlic and saute 30 seconds until fragrant, stirring constantly. Add in the sauce mixture and bring to a light boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for about 10-15 minutes until the desired thickness. Serve on toasted buns for Sloppy Joe Sandwiches.
I hope you like it, G. I don't use the "recipe" very often but just throw stuff in and taste. You might like a little chili sauce or more spices added, so make it yours.
I'll just add this recipe note here. I made this today but only had a small (7 oz) can of tomato sauce on hand, so I used that and a big squirt (~1/4 cup) of spicy ketchup. I actually think the end result is better than with the large can of tomato sauce.
I made sloppy joes a few months ago. I started out with a recipe that I found online but left out some of the stuff that didn't sound like a good idea to me, like brown sugar. Maybe I used some, but not as much as the recipe called for. It came out pretty good. In nearly every recipe, I use far less sugar than is called for.
@Hedi Mitchell -- I just noticed your message about the recipe. Here it is, though you probably don't need it now.
Here is a recipe for Lentil Sloppy Joes. I have not tried it yet, but it looks simple enough to make and can even be made in the crock pot.
