I was thinking of Robert Durst, but there are others. While growing up poor might introduce an environment that could lead to bad behavior, growing up rich doesn't insulate children from it.

From what I remember, these were two boys who had been sexually abused by their parents since they were little. This was the reason they killed the parents and were arrested, tried, and sentenced to life in prison. Money was not a motivator , so they would probably have done the killings even if they had been poor and not rich.
Personally, it seems to me like they should be allowed at least a chance for parole, given the circumstances of the case. We have been seeing murderers released from prison now, who either did kill for money, or because they were a serial killer.

I grew up in a family that was quite poor and wouldn't have had it any other way. I think family values, not family wealth, has a lot to do with how kids turn out.

    You are right!
When my kids were little, my hubby didn't make millions. Between him and me we had the house paid for.
I shopped at rummage sales for clothes and had our bills all paid.
The kids played outside in the country. They did not have any technology or their own phones. Just each other and a pet or two.
They haven't killed anyone lately nor joined a gang. Two of them joined a church but not the same one.

Yes Capitalism is alive and thriving and the world is pretty NUTS --- more killings, more crazy people doing crazy things, more drugs of all kind.

I'm fairly certain that none of these things happen in socialist countries.

Ken, I'm happy to be and live in America and I've never heard the word socialist thrown around about America as in recent years.

I never believed that sexual abuse story that came out after their trial started. I do remember the big spending spree they went on shortly after they murdered their parents, though.

"The brothers eventually left the Beverly Hills mansion unoccupied, choosing to live in adjoining condominiums in nearby Marina del Rey. They also dined expensively, and went on overseas trips to the Caribbean and London. They collectively spent approximately $700,000 before their arrests."

I was skeptical of that one, too.

I know this is an oldish thread but having read quite a few comments I wanted
to just add my 2 tuppence worth.
I have nothing against the rich who have worked hard and built up their wealth over the
years to the point where they are in a position to give their children everything they need
    and more besides.

However - there can be problems further down the line if alongside this their children are not
taught on the subject of 'entitlement' 'V' the 'values' of doing as their parents did.

How many children of rich parents grow up into young adults (and sometimes even beyond)
with the idea that the 'bank of mum and dad' means they don't ever have to 'do anything'
to get anything in life. They view their parents as a 'blank check' that just keeps on giving.
Consequently they do not learn to value or appreciate money. They do not get to experience
the feeling their parents had of the true satisfaction that comes from personal achievement.

Meanwhile, it is possible that some parents eventually start wondering why it is that they only
hear from their grown up children when they need/want money for something.

So my question here is this : while I agree that parents are right to want to ensure their child
receives as good an education as is possible - and while I understand that they would want to
give their children things that they themselves maybe had to go without in their earlier years -
would it not be better for their children's future well being if there was a point at which parents
    start saying 'no' ?

I agree with you totally. I have watched a few folks 'spoil' their kids with the best intentions and these were not rich parents!
And when the parents became elderly and could use a bit of help, the kids were still whine-y. They were obese with health issues themselves. And of course, they are now on some gov't assistance along with the parents. And our country is about in economic collapse with a bad future for savers.

It can be even worse than that.

Train up a child in the right way, and when he is older he will not depart far from it.
