Environmentalists are putting a lot of pressure on natural gas as a fossil fuel which will only increase prices. New Jersey and New York blocked the construction of pipelines. In fact though, natural gas has reduced carbon emissions. Our buses now run on it and our garbage hauler trucks as well.
I took my 2.5 mile walk today -- first time since probably April I had to wear a hooded sweatshirt. Not much leaf color here yet. Weather guy said yesterday that we're a week or two behind because it's been so mild recently. That has now changed.
@Lawrence Nobs As a newcomer, you are likely not aware that my wife and I dropped out of the city rat race in 1999, sold our home outside of Phoenix, and bought into a 300-acre place in the Missouri Ozarks, near the town of Bunker. Three family split-up, total price 300 acres $120,000. We got 90 acres with the old farmhouse, neither of the other guys wanted it; it fulfilled one of my wife's dreams! Our property was in the middle of Mark Twain National Forest, 7 million acres. A nice creek ran through the property, crystal clear water, year-round. We had electricity and phone, and a good well, no internet. Taxes were $1.00 per acre per year. Heat strictly by firewood, after 13 years cutting and splitting, we sold out, moving back to west-central Arizona. Our biggest complaint in the Ozarks: biting insects and ticks. Rural atmosphere? Couldn't be beat, Reynolds County population density 21 per square mile. Frank
Wonderful story. I watched several videos of people homesteading and getting away from city living. I would need to ease into it and learn several new skills. The forests, wild life, wind, and streams, for me, have a greater truth of life than what we are bombarded with daily from people and politicians.
I have been searching for space heaters as well at the flea market, Yvonne. Our heating bill dropped $100 last year and so did my jaw.
That may not continue with the price of energy rising as it has. I certainly hope things go well for you, @Von Jones. Ohio winters can be hard, especially near the lake.
No winter comes to SC, it just is not as cold nor as snowy as in Pennsylvania, SC does not get 3 feet+ of snow nor does the temp drop below zero
@Samual Yoder Yes, as I am painfully aware, having been born outside Chicago, and spending my first 30 years there, winter comes in varying degrees of pain. But it was not winter, but rather the corrupt leadership of Crook County, Illinois, which led me to strive for a way to permanently leave there. I did that in 1972 when I moved to Las Vegas, Nevada! Mild winter, much cold wind! Frank
Yay, me! I covered my outside water hookup so that I won't have to replace it in the spring after it freezes solid.
