This morning I had a very frightening eye problem. I was feeling fine when suddenly both my eyes went BADLY out of focus and I saw MULTIPLE IMAGES. I never even heard of such a thing.

Luckily, it lasted only 35-45 seconds , but oh my it was quite frightening.

Anyone ever hear of such a thing ? If so, what is it called ?

I'll see whar Dr.YouTube says about it and get back to you, believe it or not It has answered many of my questions. But that sounds like neuro to me according to what my eye dr, said 3 years ago,and advised me to see a neurologist, but I'm no doctor and our eyes can play tricks on us that are minor and not serious.

I remember, years ago, just for the heck of it, crossing my eyes (into the middle) and, when I stopped doing it, my eyes stayed crossed for a few seconds. Scared the heck out of me!

I have had one eye go blind for a short time, I got up and splashed some cold water on my face and it returned to normal. I told my Dr about it and he suggested I see my Primary care with the VA. Did that and he inspected the eye and told me he did not think it was a mini stroke which is common as we get older, but both eyes seems a bit different. I have some weird things happening now with my eyes and I see things that aren't there sometimes when I go to bed. I see strange patterns and it looks so real sometimes I reach over and get my flashlight and take a look. Nothing there. I did start blood pressure meds at the same time I visited that VA Doctor, they helped me a lot I believe but he prescribed too much for me and I had changed my VA care from Baton Rouge to Alexandria and I was feeling so bad I just walked in. It was closing time and I was sitting out there in the waiting room and it wasn't the only time I was forgotten but finally a doctor ask me what I was there for and he came to the conclusion that the blood pressure med was too much and he changed it. I still had a lot of issues with being dizzy because I was working outdoors then and the sunlight really hurts a person on blood pressure meds. There was times I would bend over and then get dizzy and I would have to hold on to the wall in front of me to straighten up, but once up I went back to normal. I still have slight dizzy spells that last a day or two and I have decided that it is due to change of seasons and a slight vertigo problem in the right ear. Plus getting old ..

I've had something similar but it was accompanied by a headache, so I was thinking that maybe it was a migraine, and, that not being a problem I had ever had before, I didn't recognize it for what it was. I'm not sure, though. Another time, there was a little fireworks show going on in my peripheral vision. That was quite a while ago, though, and has never reoccurred.

It is called double or multiple vision. There are at least a dozen major reasons this happens. I am going through the same thing and it came on slowly and then within days got so bad I could hardly function without closing or putting a patch on one eye. So get an eye exam first so they can check for eye and other diseases and then if that shows nothing then maybe consult your PCP about how to proceed.

It may be a simple fix or maybe complicated. I won't even guess since it can be so many things. Get a comprehensive eye exam. My problem while being nerve related was corrected with prisms in my glasses lens.

Is it controlled? I have a friend who had a lot of weird eye problems due to blood glucose spikes. You should see your doctor soon. Good luck to you. (And welcome to the forum.)

Welcome to the SeniorsOnly Club Richard!

It’s happened to me a couple of times in the past and after closing my eyes and rolling my eyes a little before opening them, it went away. I guess one set of eye muscles just wanted their temporary independence or something because an eye doctor and a physician didn’t suggest anything when I mentioned it.

That written, as @Faye Fox mentioned, there could be a myriad of reasons for the double vision ranging from simple dry (sticky) eyes to a real medical problem so yeah, it couldn’t hurt to mention the problem on your next visit to your doctor.

Note: On the sticky eye thing, I went through a period when I would get a sharp pain in my right eye especially after taking a nap. Turns out, when the surface of the eye sticks to the inside of the eye lid, there’s a lot of pain involved with opening one’s eye.
Sometimes it pays to do a lube job on one’s eyes even if you don’t think you need it.
