Have you ever had "false memories" that are very vivid but you know never happened? I have had a "memory" for years of a trip to Russia I took with my mother. Very vivid and detailed. The problem is......I've never been to Russia, my mother never went to Russia and we certainly never went together to Russia. Well, at least we saved money on the "trip"??? Shades of the movie "Total Recall".......
My mind runs nonstop, very annoying sometimes. Anyway, I have found certain daydreams that are pleasant to indulge and, if I reflect on them often enough, they become just as real, maybe even more vivid, than actual memories I have. My memories seem to be unconsciously selective, not sure what will stick with me. Some things really stick, others just disappear. I remember little to nothing of my childhood for example, just flashes.
yes I drove to NH TO SEE HER THIS Past weekend...I filled up th tank drove 3 hours to see her...There are no good roads east to west in NH or ME..I'd booked a room at a B&B....When I arrived, about 11 am, I tried ti get In to check in and couldn't check in because Their check in period is 3-6 pm....Soo I went back to my car and waited for my friend to show up...She said she'd meet me there about noon...she finally arrived and joined me in my car for conversation.... while we talked the owner of B%B came and said that I could check in... So I checked in and was given a quick tour and than given the key to my room and escorted to it...I should have known t that point that I was in trouble...MY room was on 2nd floor and access was by a narrow staircase with carpeting. I went back out to my cirri and asked my friend where we were going for lunch......we went to a very nice place that specialized in turkey meals... More later
Interesting. Since my oldest son has moved back home (here) he talks about when they were little. I always found myself thinking 'How come I don't remember that?' Anyhoo, my memories cover a lot especially when something jogs it. It's melancholic.
Isn't that weird? I was talking to my youngest son recently--he was telling me some of his memories of when we lived in Baton Rouge when he and his siblings were small. Apparently I liked to play rock music really loud back then. Anyway, I didn't recall anything he was talking about but his memories were quite detailed. The holidays hold a lot of melancholy for me, mainly remembering Christmases past with my parents and when our children were little.
I have a lot of very good memories of the holidays; however, I try to avoid them and focus on other things as all the elements of those memories are now either gone or substantially changed. Thinking about those memories can make me melancholy, sad and/or lonely (missing all the people, places and things I loved) so I don't.,
Rummaging through the house after the fire for salvageables today I found something that reminded me of probably my most embarrassing memory as a child. Back in 1953/54 my parents took me to a professional photographer where we spent half an afternoon taking photos of me in various dress (suit, casual, bathing suit etc). I couldn't wait for the photo session to be over it's just not my thing but like a good son I obeyed directions, thinking the pictures were for a photo album for them. Sunday morning in Jan 1954 I was sound asleep, when I was awakened by my mother and father screaming, " you won, you won" then my mother jumping on me as I laid in bed and giving me the biggest hug I can remember. When I got the cobwebs out they showed me the Sunday magazine section of the NY Mirror a popular newspaper at the time, and in it was a photo of me and an article that stated I was one of the winners of the Charming Child contest. I was not happy my first words "why'd you do this" for me it was embarrassing, especially since everybody on the Block where we lived had a copy of the Newspaper. I was embarrassed to walk down the street, my friends teased "Charming Child Charming Child". I must admit the $25 I received was nice and a lot for s kid my age, according to the article I was 10 years old. I was in the running for the final prize which I didn't win by the way because I believe I flunked an interview I had with Candy Jones who ran a modeling agency and was one of the judges, I believe she sensed my dislike for this whole process. Looking at the photo now I wonder where my auburn hair went. Tony, did you ever know Roseanne Savino or her Brother Peter living in Brooklyn same age group as you at that time.
No I don't recall the Savino from Brooklyn I did know a Paul Savino from Long Island he was an associate at work.
Mr Savino the Father was an Attorney, Rose was a school teacher and I think her Brother was still going to school since I only met him twice. Their folks had a cottage on Long Island and the Mother was in poor health so she lived there on Long Island full time. It was a nice little place with a cove that came up behind the property where the Father kept his boat. He loved that boat and from the time he came home each weekend he would stay out on the water all day. I read some time ago that he had passed away at 100. Not real sure about Rose's location today and I think she left New York and moved a very long time ago. It was nice there so long ago, I was fortunate enough to have had one summer at West Point and met so many nice people. I arrived with my entire company along with an artillery unit which I was temporarily attached until end of summer. The Point has changed so much today I hardly recognize it in aerials. Well, that's my memories of New York. I lived on the top floor of the Provost Marshall's building at the Point and it was normally a visitors barracks for visiting sports teams. Nice thick mattresses unlike those paper thin bunks back at Fort Campbell. A beautiful full patio on the top floor where we lived where we could stand there and look across the old football stadium nearer the Hudson. So much history in such a small area
