The other day I was looking up reviews for a mortgage lender I am considering for my next property acquisition and good glory there are a ton of places to look now: BBB, Trust Pilot, Facebook reviews, Google reviews, etc. etc. etc. It's hard to know which of those to trust or which reviews to focus upon and believe.

Where do you go online (or anywhere else for that matter) to confirm that a business you are considering using is trustworthy?

    Reviews themselves are suspect, IMO
I have found trust in some individuals within the organization
And that, initially, by word of mouth....from a friend

As far as lenders, its gotta be a very slippery slope at present

The BBB is worthless, since everyone is A+ until people start to complain about them. There is no assessment process.

I would say to ask others who they have recently used, with the understanding that many people are loathe to admit they made a mistake (there have been studies.) The best you can get out of that process is the horror stories of who to avoid, while taking positive reviews with a grain of salt.

I am on a forum called Next Door that automatically puts you in groups based upon your geography. There seems to be a lot of requests for contractor references on there, with enough back & forth that you can get a flavor for who you want to contact. If you sign up, keep in mind that they use your real name as your Member Name (there is no place to select Member Name), so when you're filling out the Profile Info, make up a name, or only use an initial for your last name. I have not found any way to change my name, so I've never posted.

Regarding mortgage lenders: I've yet to encounter one who hasn't performed as though they are new to the business. Exactly how many times do they need to come back for more data? Have they ever issued a loan solely using the info that they initially asked for with the application?

A mortgage lender would be tough. My formula for the last several years is first, that it be a local, family owned business if possible. Second that they have been here for a while; I like to see at least 10 years. Third, I do read reviews but from at least 3 - 4 different sites. I also always read the worst reviews to see if they sound legit to me and to see if the business responded and what their side of the issue was.

In fact, a guy from such a business just left.

    NOT!!!

It’s going to be almost twice what our system was when we bought it (only!) 12 years ago.
