    Dunno. Something is missing.
Doctors are given permission to euthanize autistic children and I imagine those with Down’s Syndrome too, yet whilst abortion is legal, it can’t be performed after 24 weeks and the one’s that qualify still have to wait for 5 days.

Drugs, pot and booze are pretty much permitted yet if a person is addicted, adios bye-bye.

The Netherlands has one of the foremost programs for the homeless yet, if a person is a burden to society, pick a grave.

Since the days of getting hung for trying to commit suicide are over, it would seem that assisted suicide should be legalized for those who are aware of what they are doing and yeah, even pulling the plug on those who are in a vegetative state should be a given but as for the rest, I can’t see it.
For one, once a level of permissiveness has been achieved, that level can’t help but be moved up to include other categories, and then others when that previous level has been fully accepted.

But then, we’re also talking about a country and government that tried to take farm land away from the farmers. To me, it sounds like the whole country is trying to euthanize itself.

Just thinking, perhaps the Dutch are using the Chinese government as a paradigm for moving forward?

I wonder how much of this is related to money? " Reduce the surface population of the earth" - Charles Dickens - A Christmas Carol

We'll see if a new government forms and what it does.

Interesting turn of events when it comes to lower population...

    From Reuters:
China's first population drop in six decades sounds alarm on demographic crisis

BEIJING/HONG KONG, Jan 17 (Reuters) - China's population fell last year for the first time in six decades, a historic turn that is expected to mark the start of a long period of decline in its citizen numbers with profound implications for its economy and the world.

The country's National Bureau of Statistics reported a drop of roughly 850,000 people for a population of 1.41175 billion in 2022, marking the first decline since 1961, the last year of China's Great Famine.

Long-term, U.N. experts see China's population shrinking by 109 million by 2050, more than triple the decline of their previous forecast in 2019. That's caused domestic demographers to lament that China will get old before it gets rich, slowing the economy as revenues drop and government debt increases due to soaring health and welfare costs.

"China's demographic and economic outlook is much bleaker than expected. China will have to adjust its social, economic, defense and foreign policies," said demographer Yi Fuxian. He added that the country's shrinking labour force and downturn in manufacturing heft would further exacerbate high prices and high inflation in the United States and Europe.

If we did not have immigration, our population would have been dropping for the past decade or two.

edit to add: That's not a rant against legal managed immigration, it's a fact that most countries' birth rates are below Replacement Level (meaning there are not enough births to offset the deaths.) And that trend will accelerate as the slug of Boomers shuffle off this mortal coil.

Most WESTERN nations are experiencing a decline in birthrate and an increase in legal and illegal immigration. Western nations, particularly European ones, are losing their respective cultures and in some even their languages. Parts of the U.S. already speak Spanish and some cities are even using Arabic in commerce.

Yes, you are right in stating "Western," with the glaring exception of Japan, who is avoiding the cultural destruction that is being imposed on the rest of us.

I can see nothing wrong with euthanizing citizens who are ready to end their lives. In fact, I think it is cruel to force people to stay alive if they are suffering from any number of painful conditions.

As far as over population is concerned, i honestly believe that the planet would be much better off if there were far fewer humans. We have been raping our planet for far to long. I say, let naturally occurring depopulation happen and let our planet heal itself.

But the dutch point out the problem with voluntary euthanasia...it soon gets applied by the government to those who lack full capacity (the mentally infirmed and children.) Government only agrees on rules to limit government's behaviour to get our endorsement. After that, governments does what government wants with complete abandon (don't get me started on the ATF.)

I disagree that our planet is being "raped." It will be here long after we are gone, and ay "damage" will recover faster than you might imagine.

I do agree that if people chose to procreate less, then leave them be. If they choose to procreate more, then leave them be. But the hypocrisy lies in who is targeted for population control...it's not the places that are out-breeding the rest of us (India and Africa.) It's directed at first world nations, solely because the Elites will not abide regular citizens enjoying the lifestyles that we have. Somehow when you and I "have more," the Elites are comparatively diminished, and they will not stand for it.

Just like "Global Warming" and "Global Cooling," the standards for "Maximum Population" are constantly rewritten to suit the propaganda and control of the day. The problem lies in a populace who will see the government destroy farms that then claim that we are out-breeding the resources, and that populace will fully embrace such insane lies.

ps: Thank you for being my internet friend who abides my perpetually contrary positions. ;)

Voluntary euthanasia will not, in the end, be truly voluntary. People will find that if they fall into the useless eater categories, euthanasia will be the only medical procedure available to them.

There can be no doubt that the earth is warming. If we look at the arctic regions we see that the ice cap is shrinking. . This is due, in large part, because of deforestation, especially the rain forests of the world. Deforestation is caused by an ever increasing need for farmlands to feed ever growing populations.
The shrinking ice cap is not a propaganda ploy. It is really happening.

As I said before, over population is surely having a harmful effect on the earth ecosystem. The greater the population, the greater the need for ever more farmland.

The earth is like an analogy of your house. At some point, your house becomes way , way too crowded and life becomes misery.
Thus, I am in favor of a mandate of one child per family.

You are correct when you say that the earth will continue to change, no matter what we do, BUT if we continue to over populate, the earth may eventually not have any humans unless we act and act fast.

Just out of curiosity (and I don't have the answer), what do you think caused the ice sheet covering our continent to melt 10,000 years ago? And not only has it not returned, there were deserts when there were only a sparse number of tribes here.

I'm not trying to start an argument. It's not as though either of us has any authority over what happens.

He is searching the archives at MSNBC at this moment for the approved response.

Maine has had at least two significant glacial periods, both of which melted long before any of the currently stated causes of global warming were in existence.

Well, obviously it was caused by global warming. But, why that happened , I don't know. Perhaps a tilting of the earths axis ? All i do know is that the earth undergo's dramatic changes every so often, and always has done so.

Just as a side note: Once, tens of thousands of years ago, the Sahara Desert was covered in water. Today we can find fossils of marine life scattered across what is now desert. As the waters receded land animals moved in and we can find their bones throughout the Sahara. Animals such as crocodiles, hippo, elephants , rhinos, antelope etc.
