I understand there is a potato shortage, so fries and chips--chips and crisps for the Brits--are sometimes doubling in price. There is some hope that they will come down after the fall harvest, but I wouldn't hold my breath. I think the Biden Tax is here to stay .
When I go to a 'normal' grocery store that has all the conveniences, I almost go into shock looking at the prices. I don't know how real people live. Food is not generally a problem for us with the farm. I am old and not very fashionable so I don't have to do clothes or any of the stuff young folks buy. Furniture, trinkets, art...stocks and bonds
He brought the price of gas down a bit when we made enough noise. Maybe a few months before the election he will do the same magic.
I grew up in a family with 6 kids. I think we survived because our father managed a Murphy store, so could bring home whatever we needed (as long as the P&L Statement did not suffer for it.) As an adult, my ex and I split up 3 months after we bought a house. I was making $5/hour. My needs are simple and my expectations are low. Like you, when I go through the checkout, I wonder how those with kids are surviving this mess.
Except he has drained the Strategic Petroleum Reserve so I don't think he will be able to do that again. Now I think he wants another virus that will lock everybody down again.
I see 1 or 2 desperate posts on our neighborhood forum every week from people who can’t quite make it for one reason or another. Many families are just one unexpected bill away from disaster, a car breaks down or the refrigerator quits and they are in real trouble. Some of the most heartbreaking, at least to me, are the people rehoming pets because they can’t afford to feed them. Neighbors have been stepping up but they won’t be able to do that forever. At least there are shelters for the pets if no one can take them.
I just ran across this. Bidenomics: Food prices expected to rise through 2024 Recently released federal pricing analysis from the U.S. Department of Agriculture projects that food prices will continue to rise through 2024. The USDA pointed to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index released earlier this month, which showed consumer prices overall rose 3.2% in the previous twelve months. Food prices, though rose more quickly at 4.9% during the same time. Now, USDA says that increase will continue. https://justthenews.com/nation/states/center-square/food-prices-expected-rise-through-2024
The money keeps losing value with all our debt. Remember it took a wheelbarrow full of marks to buy a loaf of bread in Germany, pre-war.
Well, that's enlightening.I have 1 year before I am old enough for OAP.By that time I may just have my apartment and nothing more.
My Dad always told me that only 3 things were important and as a Korean Veteran I believe he knew what he was talking about.I wish he was here now when I need him the most.1Allways pay your bills on time 2.Keep a roof over your head 3.Food in the cupboard. Things are harder now Dad....
Julia, I think your father was right about what to do but that forecast I posted is for the US. First, it could be incorrect and second economic conditions may not be the same in Canada as they are here. If food prices go up much more there will probably be more pantries and perhaps some increased government assistance.
