This is something I never expected to see on YouTube--funeral preparation. Please keep in mind that embalming is not required in most states, as both Jews and Muslims eschew the practice. If a body has to be shipped across state lines, however, it must be embalmed, both the sterilize and preserve the body.

It is not too graphic but is does describe stuff you might not want to hear.

Too bad our friend Lon Tanner is not still with us to answer questions, as he was a licensed funeral director.

I shan't watch, but will take it as a reminder that I have to do a prepay plan so my wishes are on record with someone. I keep procrastinating...

I was saying that exact thing to my husband earlier today; that we need to get our funerals planned and prepaid. His parents had prepaid all funeral expenses and had all the arrangements made, so the funeral part of their passing was fairly simple. I don't want our kids to have to deal with that stuff. The funeral home did try to gouge us for a few things but my husband told them to stuff it.

As for the video, I have seen that before. I actually find those videos very interesting, and learning what is done to a corpse made me doubly glad that I will be cremated.

I think I've mentioned that when my mother died she had no left instructions. We were sitting at the funeral home and one sister said "Mom told me she wanted to be cremated." The other sister said "Mom told me that no matter what, don't let them cremate me." I was certain that they both told the truth, so I asked for rough estimates for each. Then I made an executive decision. Cremation it was.

As it turns out, that allowed us to put her in the same plot as my cremated father...just dig another post hole. Easy Peasy.

I told my husband that if he decides he wants to be buried, the kids can just sprinkle my ashes in there with him. (Unless he dies first of course. :D) Hubby is one of "those" who doesn't want to discuss final arrangements.

If you recall, we've discussed this a few years ago, and at that time I had already been procrastinating back then. I don't have an aversion, I just haven't had a reason to. But I don't want to have a health scare force me into it...I want to be in a reasonable state.

Now I know your husband has been avoiding it, I feel better. My only motive is to not leave someone else stuck with it...I got no one to leave instructions with. I'd just as soon drag myself down by my creek and let the critters have at it, leaving droppings of me all over the county.

This place is pricier than many I have looked at. I found it funny that the ashes provided with a cardboard container from the company was like $1075 and if you provide your own shoe box it is $975.

That just itself open for too many jokes. I have no idea where to begin.

I will say that I attended a few funerals during COVID and was infuriated at how restrictive the proceedings were. Poor people and their families forever denied their proper sendoff.

I gave my nephew a Things To Know letter so when I'm gone, he will know everything he needs to know. It includes financial info and stuff about the house. I made one bank account a joint account so he can access $$ to take care of business when I'm gone. The rest of the accounts are in trust. I'm to be cremated and ashes placed in my father's grave. It's a lot cheaper than a regular funeral so I'll be a cheapskate until the very end. I read about embalming and it sounds ghoulish. Better to go up in smoke.

Yeh, I'm going to be cremated and have my ashes spread by the creek on my property. I need to talk to them to see how to have that done at minimal expense.

I think I first heard of it on Shark Tank, apparently some states are allowing human composting. It's a whole process where the body is put in composting material, and allowed to decompose. The final compost is then used for fertilizer, as you would normal compost. It's not for me but if you're interested there are a lot of information online.

I think being buried unenbalmed and having a tree planted over you would be the same thing except you would remain in one location.

I've mentioned elsewhere that years ago I watched a show on natural burials. The show focused on a company in North Carolina that buries people without embalming, without a box and without a grave marker. They do record your GPS coordinates.
