I don't believe that is true. I have had gas stoves all my life and have never had a vent to the outside. I currently have a microwave over my stove with a "vent" that just recycles back into the room so I never use it. I don't believe I know anyone who has a vent hood that vents outside.
Me....I have a hood that vents through the attic to the roof, where there is a thingajig on it to keep the rain out. It has a strong fan, too. I also have the cabinets and drawers without pulls. There's an indentation on the top of the drawers and bottom of the upper cabinets/top of the lower cabinets. I have no problem opening them. I wouldn't choose those type of cabinets but they give me no problems. I've had gas stoves and electric stoves. I currently have an glass-top electric and I love it.
I should have been more clear; I know that plenty of people have vented hoods... I just don't know them personally.
I have one that I installed in 2015 or so. I was 61 years old at the time, and have always had a gas stove in my homes, even as a kid. This is the first exhaust fan I've had, and I only use it when I need to clear smoke. I never gave any thought to my gas stove emitting things that might hurt me...and I've spent a LOT of time cooking. I'm not saying there's no risk, and it makes me wonder for all of the goofy cartoon characters warning us about the smell of gas leaks why they never mentioned proper ventilation.
You are exposing yourself to the products of combustion. I lived in a house growing up with unvented gas heaters. I haven't died yet, but they are illegal in most states now and I know it wasn't healthy.
Same. Plus we have a gas furnace, gas water heater, gas logs in the fireplace. I know the furnace and water heater are vented but until the Biden administration I had never heard of any warnings about the dangers of gas stoves, etc. I know the reason gas is "odorized" and I have respect for it, but I don't have any reason to believe it is dangerous in general use.
Just have your fire department come and check the exhaust gas emissions for your stove. If they are the least bit off, i.e., if you EVER see yellow flames from the burner, you are emitting CO in amounts that could become lethal. I am pro gas stoves, but then I don't want a leaky exhaust system in my truck either. I had one and had it fixed. I didn't die, but I don't believe it was healthy.
I see unvented gas heaters for sale in lots of places. I guess they may be illegal in some states but I am not planning to buy one so I really don't care. I have cooked on a gas stove all my life and I will continue to do so; I guess I like living on the edge. Weird that this is only recently such a dire health concern.
Listen to the American Lung Association. They recommend against gas stoves, especially for those with asthma or any lung ailment. I love my gas stove, but I wouldn't have one without a hood vented to the outside. My gas furnace and my gas water heater are also vented outside because of products of combustion. Most propane stoves have the same warnings about not using them indoors unless they are specifically certified for indoor gas heating. Bring your gas grill into the kitchen and cook on it, then ask your local air quality folks to check the air.
I am not saying you cannot cook with a gas stove and live a long life, but I am saying you are exposing yourself to unnecessary risks, especially if you don't have a vented hood. Who knows aht long-term low level exposure to CO will cause, but I don't think it is a good thing to do. Our gas stove emitted unsafe CO levels and we wouldn't have known it if the alarm hadn't gone off. When the fire department arrived, the first question they asked was, "Do you have a hood vented to the outside?". We do but my wife wasn't using it. One of the burners she was using was set too high and was producing CO, but she was canning and had 4 of the 5 burners all going.
Well-made gas stoves are complete with emission removing built in tools and also usually come with hoods that vent out all pollutants. They are generally rather costly, but in the long run well worth the money spent. Controlled cooking is a dream with them, and I wouldn't cook with anything else.
I just asked hubby and ours is not vented to outside. I use only the top burners 99 percent of the time- but may start cracking the kitchen window over the sink.
I hope we all know that Biden is doing everything he can to do away with fossil fuels including natural gas appliances that Americans have been using for years. They are safe, convenient and cheap. They are part of our higher standard of living than the rest of the world. We have already become a third world country on the political front and will soon be one in other ways if we let Democrats have their way on things like this. Climbing off my soapbox.
Wellllll Biden has just increased the laws to make us green by 2030. We are to bring our homes and businesses on line with complete insulation/ side walls, all efficient appliances, electrical upgrades...carbon free! People who own buildings will have to spend thousands, 10's of thousands. Renters may be screwed by rent increases to cover landlord's problems and most won't be able to afford to buy a house any more. So who do owners sell to? I have two fireplaces in each of my houses and my barnhouse has a wood stove. So, what? rip them all out and get more furnaces? Pretty sure guns are going to be out and I won't be able to bring my horse home.
