I saw some postings about the number of restaurants closing. The higher minimum wage will lead to higher unemployment, especially among the young.

It's all getting really REALLY old. Surely people have enough operating brain cells to at least realize that economic tampering of this nature ha already proven the predictions of chaos threatening hyperinflation true?

Why isn't there more outrage and demand to stop this? Or are people actually quite aware but are buried under an inappropriate alliance between those pushing social/political agendas and the corporate media?

Many of Newsom's well-connected are exempt from this due to questionable "bakes their own bread on site for sale as a separate menu item as of Sept 2023" rules that got Panera Bread (owned by a friend of Newsom) exempted. And word has it that Newsom himself owns a restaurant...guess what he does not pay his workers?

All these stupid citizens cheering stupid rules that reek of corruption, yet they honestly view themselves as being "better than." It's the exact same as a 5th grade clique, except that the 10 year old kids might still age out of it.

Sounds like a lot of Republican talking points. ;) We ought to at least try raising the minimum wage to a living wage just once and see what really happens. It might just be a good thing after all the dust settles and people adjust.

They've tried "Trickle Down" economics over and over. Still an awful lot of unhappy people.

Minimum wage was never intended to be a "living wage". It was supposed to be a starting point from which people could climb as they gained experience and ability. Unfortunately, people with no education and little ability get stuck in minimum wage jobs. It is sad that it happens, but raising the minimum to a "living wage" eliminates the opportunity for those that the minimum wage was supposed to help.

What @Don Alaska said. Not all jobs were ever intended to be living wage jobs that could support you for an entire career. The idea is ridiculous.

The purpose of the minimum wage was to stabilize the post-depression economy and protect the workers in the labor force. The minimum wage was designed to create a minimum standard of living to protect the health and well-being of employees. Others have argued that the primary purpose was to aid the lowest paid of the nation's working population, those who lacked sufficient bargaining power to secure for themselves a minimum subsistence wage.
    It takes some imagination.

The Restaurant business is already in shock over the cost of food lately which is also realized by the guests who have to pay higher prices for their menu items.

Now, what Newson and his cohorts aren’t thinking about are the ethics part of the new minimum wage for a multi-tiered food service establishment.
    Ethics? Yup.
The minute the $20 minimum becomes effective, everyone who was already making the minimum and above will have to be given raises too.
    Example:
Dishwashers and utility persons used to make $10 per hour has to be paid $20.
Since the dishwasher is now paid $20, the line cooks that were making $20 will have to get about $30.
The Kitchen manager who used to make $30 will have to get his or her raise to $40 or so.
And on and on it goes with the exception of the owner who used to make between 5-10 cents per dollar will have to jack up the menu prices which, if he’s able to keep the doors open will also raise the amount of taxes he has to pay plus his share of an employee’s SS which also goes up with the minimum wage.

Solution: Close the derned doors, leave the state and start over where there is a sensible state government.

And no. Those are NOT Republican or Democrat talking points. They are the points of someone who spent 53 years of his secular career in the Restaurant business.

Note: Most OWNERS of free standing and franchise restaurants do not make $20 per hour.

as long as those that can afford it keep buying, they can charge any price they want. I still don't know how middle-income blue-collar worker families are surviving this. Hard to believe any of those folks would vote for a democrat, let alone biden. I'd like to know how many small businesses have lost their income, and if it's not a conspiracy to eliminate people in middle income bracket, I'd be surprised :(

Ever wondered how many of our homeless actually lost everything during Covid? I never even think about it until someone says, or posts something like this. I don't call a MacDonalds small biz and certainly not family-owned.

Everyone knows that the coffee businesses will never go out of biz, and neither will the booze stores. I saw this video from Oregon, rather long, but basically, Oregon's passed some law where if you even have as much as a chicken coop with a few chics, your illegal, small home gardens raising and sharing or selling their produce are illegal. Other States will follow if they haven't already:

Our Meals on Wheels "others" eat, not me, are total garbage, nothing but processed and carbs like instant potatos, rice galore, poison to the many that live here that are T2 diabetics, and/or obese :(
