I haven't used this site personally, but I've seen people talking about it on another site I visit. I don't have time to delve into this aspect of at home work right now, but it seems as if many legitimate sites/companies hire freelance writers through the site, so if you're interested in making some money using your writing skills, this might be a place to investigate. https://work.onespace.com/
I've used this, but they seem to be undergoing an overhaul at the moment. Most of the stuff I wrote was answering the dumbest questions imaginable. In fact, you couldn't imagine a lot of them and many were simply unanswerable. The plus side was that they paid you quickly, but the downside was that some of the editors seemed intent on marking you down whatever you wrote. Some were all right, but I came up against a few that were murder. One pulled me up for spelling errors when I forgot I was British and spelt something the UK way. Another rejected my reference to the BBC website because it was, apparently, not a reliable resource. A mixed bag, but you can make a few quid, oops, dollars, from it.
Ha, maybe they didn't know what BBC was. I've seen people elsewhere saying they use the site, but I don't think it's quite to your level, @Tom Locke. They tend to be people just starting out, without many marketable skills. The site had another name in the past, but I don't recall what it is. I figured it might be good for those looking to make a few dollars here and there without expending much effort, but it sounds as if in some cases, depending on who reviews your work, it might be more trouble than it's worth.
I love to write and have authored some books at smashwords.com. I definitely will check out the site when I've time. Thanks so much for the information!
I am a member of Onespace although not as a writer. I have done microtask for them. However, things have gone down hill there it seems since they lost their contract with the question and answer website. They just don't seem to have the work orders they use to have since that time.
There is another site called Textbroker where you can get paid to write short articles/blog posts for various companies. The pay isn't awesome, but it can keep you busy. One to check out anyway!
There are a number of writing sites on the web. Some of them are OK, and others not so much. I find that all of them have their pros and cons. I have investigated a number of them, and write on a few. I hate it when editors make it nearly impossible for you to get to the next level, by being very picky about punctuation and so forth. I mean, if client's like the work, and consider it to be excellent, that should count for something. I understand standards have to be met, but really!!!!
