It's a bit more ambitious than the jewelry box... It's going to take longer than a weekend.. for sure.
Wow, you've got some great hobbies going! I'm starting a painting smock for my granddaughter on Wednesday!
Thanks... but this "hobby" just may be because I am having that room turned into a dressing room with shelving and drawers and hanging space and shoe storage put in. The Jewelry armoire and the dressing table weren't the right color to fit into the plan.. so rather than spend hundreds to replace them, I decided the more frugal way would be to paint them to match. Whether or not this turns into a "real" hobby remains to be seen... Although I have some end tables and a coffee table in the living room that could use a make-over........
Are you sanding them by hand, or something more powerful? I've finished and refinished furniture in the past, but that was when I had my dad helping, and access to his tools. These days, I mainly stick to small projects, since my hands don't work as well as they used to. I do need to re-sand and refinish the top of at least one piece, a bookcase, but I'm putting that off for a bit.
I am using an electric round pad sander for the larger flat surfaces.. but just to rough up the finish.. I use plain sandpaper and sand the curvy surfaces by hand. Then I tack clothe and apply the first coat of primer. I'm actually painting.. not staining. The dressing table is veneered and the top has been damaged by a leaking perfume bottle..
Great job, Carol! I don't think refinishing furniture is considered a hobby. Maybe you can collect jewelry.
I agree with @Joe Riley , that is a beautiful set, @Carol Cook ! I am sure that it will be even more special to you knowing that you did all the work to make it look the way that it does. So, is all of the remodeling done for your new dressing room now, and how are you enjoying the whole thing ? We have a small three-bedroom house, but I never would have thought about making one of the rooms into a dressing room. Actually, I don't have enough dressy clothes to even need one. We have our bedroom, which is the largest bedroom, and then the computer room/office where we have the desktop and printer as well as the Gazelle glider, and then the smallest bedroom we have turned into a kind of pantry/storage room. I am looking forward to your pictures of your new dressing room when it is all finished !
Not yet. It will be installed on May 24th. We are still working on getting the room ready. We have some door frames to paint, and baseboards to put down. Since we have all the drawings of the plan, we can go ahead with that. I will certainly post lots of pics of it when it's done.
