I love bananas and get bananas every week on Monday afternoons, yum yum yum. Two weeks ago I got 88 bananas and was concerned that might be too many so last week I only got 51 of them. That wasn't enough so today I got 77 bananas. I love apricots and nectarines too but they're way too expensive in stores. I'm growing 2.5 year old apricot, nectarine, plum and cherry trees in my back yard but they won't be fruiting for a few more years.
It seems like anything overstocked or overpriced at the moment suddenly "has antioxidant properties." I smell marketing. Meanwhile my doctor told me several times "No bananas!" due to Type 2 diabetes, and especially since they can raise potassium levels too high and exacerbate cardio-vascular issues. He suggested apples as a far better selection for general health.
88 bananas!! Who buys 88 or do you have a grove?? And yes they are higher in sugar, I knew there was a reason I don't eat many.
Your doctor quack is giving you seriously bad advice, which is why you have diabetes in the first place. Also, bananas are one the lowest priced foods. Considering the average banana has 105 calories, and that they are currently $.23 each at Trader Joe's, that's $4.35 for 2000 calories. Plus I always get the biggest ones possible. Try showing me another natural healthy nutritious food as good as bananas that has that low of a price for 2000 calories. @Joy Martin - The sugar is locked up in the fruit. It is not a free sugar like many people eat in their foods. Complex carbohydrates are good. I've been eating 80+ % of calories from complex carbohydrates for more than 50 years. However, alas, I do not have a banana grove.
Most doctors are nutritionally ignorant. Their education is focused on drugs & surgery. And I've found that many are also diabetes ignorant as well. That includes endocrinologists. A banana has 25-35 gms carbohydrates, along with many other nutrients. I'm diabetic & I'll eat 1/2 a banana with peanut butter as a snack. That has about the same carbs as an apple - which has 12-25 gms. When I eat a food, I portion it based on the carbs, fiber and nutrients. Carbs/sugar are not the whole story.
My thought is this-again - ALL the Who Ha about to eat this not this blah blah blah - basically hog wash, Come on people we all grew up on the very foods They tell us we should or not eat. Most all foods have some value to them health wise. Aside from having been revamped and artificially grown are still good. Moderation is key and knowing what your body accepts or disapproves of -that is whats fro you. Too much advertisement has corrupted our way of thinking, in how to eat, brush your teeth. sleep this way. ....how did we all ever survive all these years without Their advice ? If you have certain medical conditions then yes listen to your doctor, not some nit wit on You Tube claiming to be a doctor .
I think the issue with bananas is that they cause spiking of blood glucose levels. There is more to nutrition than total net carbs. Eating greener bananas could help.
I've been eating bananas for quite a long time, always eat the ripest bananas possible, and my glucose levels are rock solid stable. It's the height of irony that the people who have diabetes frequently think they know what causes diabetes, when the opposite is the case.
Seems odd. I've been told this by doctors as well as in articles online. Do you measure your blood glucose?
Diabetes and heart disease are HUGE money makers for chemical corporation doctor quacks. The LAST thing they would ever want to do is to cure people of diabetes, heart disease, & dementia etc. Yes I took my own glucose readings for a short period of time, during a hard hour long workout of repetitions, including going hard and laying down on the ground in between, and found it to be extremely difficult to knock my glucose levels out of whack. I only did it for curiosity and had very sore fingers after that so never did it again. However my energy levels always remain stable, and I don't even take any naps - like many seniors do these days. Consider this. You keep going to the doctor quack, yet you still have diabetes. Why???? If the doctor quack knew what he was doing - and was telling the truth - then you wouldn't have diabetes anymore.
I don't recommend that for everyone, but I like bananas. This past Monday I got 77 of them, intending to eat them in a week. This morning I ate 6 bananas after exercise, then 6 more in the sun on the patio. The rest of the day I've been eating organic oats, sweet potatoes, rice and pinto beans.
I am weird about bananas. They have to be "Goldilocks" for me... not too green and not too ripe. I don't like the cloying sweetness once that peak of ripeness is past. So they are good for about one day around here.
