Why would anybody pay that much for pet insurance? I've never had pet bills high enough to justify that amount of money, and my last dog and cat lived to be in their 20s.

We no longer have a pet, but over the years with several pets we never had pet insurance. My last little dog blew out both his knees jumping off our bed when he'd hear the garbage truck coming. I don't know why the sound of that truck just made him go bonkers.

Anyway, he had to have surgery on both back knees (torn ligaments) and it cost us several thousand dollars for that episode. (He was worth every penny.)

Since I started feeding my cats premium foods, there haven't been many veterinary bills until the last year or two of their lives. While some people might put them down at that point, and a good argument could be made for that, I consider them family and want to keep them with me for as long as possible, so I spend the money. I suspect that if I had pet insurance, they would not agree to pay to treat a 28-year-old cat, and I'd end up having to foot that bill anyhow. I do have a plan that is essentially a credit card for veterinary bills so that a cat doesn't have to go untreated just because I might be broke at the moment. So far, I haven't had to use that.
