This is not a feng shui or numerology but just the opinion of my father-in-law that when you are buying a lot and building a house, make sure that the house is facing east. Maybe the Chinese will say that facing the rising sun is a good symbol of life. But the logic there is the avoidance of the afternoon sun which is so hot during summer. We are lucky to buy this house which is facing east. The morning sun is not that hot and we can endure that in the terrace which lasts until 9am only. But the afternoon sun starts to bake the backside of our house starting at 2pm until 5pm. We had to place a shade to shield our dining table from the hot sunlight.
I love southern exposure myself. More sun in the winter, less in the summer. My apartment faces east. I wish I had a little more sun. I'm glad not to get the summer afternoon sun though. I do not like northern exposure at all.
What direction is best depends on the house layout and the way it's used. Facing south is usually best. Our house faces south. We have a small deck on the east side but our full length back porch is on the north side. Since the porch is used much of the year our house would be better turned around to face north so the porch would be on the south side.
