Britain has only one endemic species of bird (i.e. one found nowhere else in the world). It is the Scottish Crossbill and it uses its crossed bill (yes!) to winkle out seeds from pine cones in the forests of the Scottish Highlands.

Okay, I concede that there isn't a huge amount of red in Renoir's Girl with a Fan, but it's one of my favourite paintings from the vast collection at The Hermitage and for another thing, the girl is very reminiscent of someone I know well.
