I saw photos years ago when they built the prototypes, one showing 7 Greyhound busses inside the plane, end to end! Absolutely amazing. I wondered over the years whether their use was continued. Today I came across this: http://www.popularmechanics.com/military/aviation/a26716/air-force-reactivating-c-5-galaxy/ Here's another amazing pic: Look at the man standing on the ramp! Frank
saw one of those Frank at an air show years back. it is Hugh !! it was in the summer and people were using those giant wing for shade.
Got to fly on one from the UK to Air Base Incirlik,Turkey right after Desert Storm to dig water wells for Operation Provide Comfort. We loaded it up with equipment and there is an upper deck that seats about 70 personnel. Most of our group was excited to fly on it, but all I could think of was 'how in the heck is THAT gonna get off the ground!'.
@Gary Ridenour @Tim Burr In comparison by today's standards, the newest turbojet engine being designed by GE for Boeing has an inlet fan diameter as BIG as the fuselage of a 737 jetliner! I'll try to get some pics. It will be the largest such engine built to date, generates 105,000 llbs. of thrust. All the turbine blades will be made of composite material, no metal. Much lighter, thus more fuel efficient, running at 2,400 degrees F! Frank
