Asking Members' Opinions On Flaking

  1. (Plz forgive if I sound a little harsh- have headache, am tired, and really fed up about current situation)

Landlord and maintenance supervisor decided they wanted new carpets in the apartments. They hired someone to do the jobs. When I was told the week before last that it'd be done last week, I moved all the furniture myself so a) the workmen would have less to do and take less time, and b) to reduce the risk of them breaking something.

Maintenance supervisor contacted me and said they should be here to do it on Thursday around 10 a.m. (that was last Thursday). When they didn't show, he contacted me again and said around 11. As I didn't want to risk them breaking my computer, I had it disconnected and out of the way, but they never showed up- causing me to lose around half of a work day. It must have been after 3 p.m. when one guy showed up, but instead of doing the job he simply measured the floor; he said he'd be back after noon the next day to re-carpet. As all the furniture was moved, I ended up sleeping on the floor (or trying to).

Shortly after noon the next day, I had everything ready- including stashing kitty in the bathroom. He never showed up that day, either. Poor kitty was stuck in the bathroom for around 3 hours, til it seemed clear they weren't coming.

Maintenance supervisor contacted me a couple of times to ask if they'd shown up. The last time I told him no, he said maybe they'd be here tomorrow. Seemed to me he should have concluded the carpet guy is irresponsible (and has no concern about other people's time), but instead of dumping this guy and finding someone else to do the job, I'm again expected to wait for someone who may or may not show up.

I already wasted two days last week, plus it's difficult to get around the apartment with furniture piled up everywhere. I've adjusted my work schedule and also outside errands to accommodate a workman who hasn't shown up and never contacted anyone to say he wasn't coming.
Although there's nothing I can do about this, do you think I'm being unreasonable to think people should either follow through with their commitments or at least make a call to make other arrangements?

It is the same here in Australia with the various trades and utilities, and I think it is a terrible imposition on ordinary people's (and pets') lives! Making arrangements within a confirmed 4-hour period seems more than reasonable to me. I am exasperated for you - not that it helps you at all!

@Janice Martin Gosh...I'd be ready to ring someone's neck by now if I were going through what you are going through! You definitely have every right to be angry, frustrated, aggravated and thoroughly fed up with "waiting" for the carpet guy to show up. And I'm glad you have let off some "steam" here and I hope it helped release a little of the stress you are feeling. Besides telling you I'm so sorry you are having to go through this with "inconsiderate of your time and hard work" people the only other thing I can do and I am doing is praying that all this will be resolved very soon for you...and sincere apologies given to you too. :(

You're not at all unreasonable to be angry about this. Unfortunately, it seems that there are no longer enough contractors to go around anymore. I don't know if people now will take either a cushy job or none at all, but we have trouble getting anyone like an electrician or a plumber to show up when they say they are going to, or even to bother letting us know when they're not going to show up.

Just twenty years ago, it seemed like they were all happy to have the work. Now, it doesn't matter whether they have promised to be by at a set date and time, if something better comes along, they'll take the other job and leave us hanging.

I'm sure it's not like that everywhere, but I've mentioned to other people who are having similar problems in other parts of the country.

Obviously your landlord is not hiring a professional tradesman, What you describe is a landlord more interested in collecting a rent cheque rather than keeping his tenants happy.

In Fresno it seems it takes forever to get someone even to come out and give an estimate especailly in the HVAC and plumbing business.

I'm still waiting for someone to call me back about a gutter months ago. I had my Gardener fix it in the meantime and a lot cheaper.

Although once I have an appt, they always do keep it and come even earlier than the usual couple hours window.

I always ask that they call me when theyre about 5 mins from my house so that I can put Pickles away and they always comply. They always put their booties on too so after I finally get one...they're good.

When my daughter's home flooded and they had to do a total renovation I was concerned she would have trouble getting workers to come and do the renovations, etc. Evidently there are still people who need jobs and appreciate them...because that wasn't a problem at all for her. Of course it helps that her husband knows and had worked with so many of the people they hired to renovate their home. I also loved that the Christian Churches here formed teams of helpers and gave out free renovation material for many of the homes that flooded. My daughter was blessed with free drywall for her home and a team from the Church I attend that installed that drywall. :)

I'm only lived in one apartment complex in Florida where maintenance was a problem...and that was more the Management's problem than those who worked in this area.
