The "Boomer" Generation was from 1946 to 1964. Below is what I just read online: The user query is asking for the negative perception of being a baby boomer, which is a person born between 1946 and 1964. Some of the criticisms that baby boomers face are12: They are greedy and wasteful, and have used up the economy and the world's resources for their own benefit. They have no regard for the future generations and the problems they will inherit, such as climate change, debt, and inequality. They have a reputation and status that have recently fallen, as younger generations blame them for causing many of the world's issues. What do you think?
The errant 5th paragraph of your link pretty much says it all. The BBer’s and prior generations hold nor held no disregard for those who came before us. Matter of fact, the BBer’s as a general run hold the generation before us in high esteem because we recognize all they accomplished. My question is what has the last couple of generations given to society that we can honestly say that it is an accomplishment? Being disliked by someone who spends all their time sitting on their butts and playing games and sexting on the technology our generation gave them can’t be considered as much of a threat. Oh yeah, they invented safe spaces….
One thing I know, from listening to a friend of ours (former Vietnam Army Vet-Drafted), both of his sons have major degrees in engineering, very good paying jobs, a family, nice vehicle and very nice house. They are both from Generation X. After their dad got out of the Army, Ford Motor Company (Detroit) gave him a job with excellent pay. He paid for his son's college and ended up retiring from Fort Motor Company with an excellent pension. He was able to take his wife and sons on numerous Cruises and other vacations. What I'm talking about here is one word "money" or that old phrase "money talks while everything else walks". His two boys aren't spoiled at all, but very respectable men. And, as far as I'm concerned, if more of the generations before the BBer's went into some military service, as either an enlistee or officer, there wouldn't be so much discussion about how BBer's are ruining America.
I could not care less what they think. Too many are firmly stuck in ideologies that bias their perceptions so much that their opinions aren’t worth squat.
They have no regard for the future generations and the problems they will inherit, such as climate change, debt, and inequality. They're just setting up the next generation for "change" to fix what this hateful generation caused. What a crock.
And, boy is the internet full of articles now concerning the three Generations (BBer's, GenX, Millennials and even GenZ).
It's an interesting topic. I don't think the usual stereotype of Baby Boomers fits even the majority of those born between '46 and '64. Is it children of white, middle class, nuclear family, suburban house, and 2 cars? Too hard to generalize. And it's not quite fair to compare Baby Boomers and those that followed them, yet. The GenX, Millenials, and GenZ, or whatever, have not had a chance for anyone to study what their contributions, including those into old age, might be. It's fair now to compare early Boomers with the previous generations. They appear to have fallen short. But did seniors change from what we knew as children and young adults, or were we not old enough to be interested in the similarities then versus now?
Subsequent generations have given us way more genders than we used to have, and they've taken whining to new level of craziness.
Whining, no kidding. I’m surprised they haven’t insisted it be covered in the Olympics. We’d have gold medal winners in this country for sure.
Wife and I are early Baby Boomers and we don't think we've "fallen short" about anything. During my high school years, I was like any farm boy and had responsibilities.
I'm sure you didn't fall short, and did have responsibilities, Cody. Like I said, it's impossible to generalize.
A lot of the articles about the Boomers have to do with the politicians who are in charge of things. For example, the current Congress breakdown. Boomers still make up a large majority in the Senate and a plurality in the House.
Maybe everyone has different ideas about what's wrong with boomers but can agree that something is wrong or maybe not. Even though it makes me older now I'm happy to say that I made it into this world about a year before the war ended and the boomers came along and I definitely did not grow up as they did. I was the late in life kid for my parents and just a few years ahead of my oldest brother's kids. I watched his babies become spoiled rotten kids and irresponsible adults but it wasn't limited to his kids. Child rearing practices underwent a huge change for that generation and it wasn't helpful to the end product. Some called those kids the Spock generation. It also used to be common to hear people say that the generation was spoiled by parents who went through much hardship in the depression and WWII and were determined that their children would never experience hardship. True or not, I don't know. I think they are the generation that never matured and grew up. Of course, there are exceptions but in general many are still looking for someone to be mommy and daddy in their old age Nowadays, they look to government to fill that role or maybe the neighbor government. Just yesterday I saw a group of seniors on the Internet discussing what a neighboring country was obligated to do for their country. That said, I don't think that younger generations have improved anything. Instead young people are raised without responsibility or accountability today. Freedom is good but lack of accountability is not. Of course these are generalizations. There are exceptions and the exceptions will likely rule tomorrow while the masses lie unwashed in the streets waiting for their next handout.
To the extent there are issues with Boomers, you gotta realize that we were the first generation raised with televisions in the house and transistor radios wherever we went. We had corrupting parties that no other generation had influencing us. Some parents were more than happy to stick us in front of the TV and tell us to stay put. Subsequent generations not only have those non-parental influences, but the internet/"social media" as well. We were also the first generation under direct attack to "don't trust anyone over 30" and a myriad of other destructive "break the chain of legacy knowledge and attachment" attacks so that "others" could insert themselves to fill those roles. We were the first generation heavily influenced by commercials telling us that all of life's dissatisfactions could be fixed by buying the right product...that you buy things not for their utility but by how they make you feel and what they make others think of you. We all know that if you turn down the volume on a TV ad, you can't tell if they are selling vacations, underwear or cars. We were the first generation where the family unit came under direct overt attack, leveraging life's attendant struggles, and using all the aforementioned media conduits and marketing strategies. Those efforts may or may not have borne significant fruit. As far as the opinion of subsequent generations is concerned, the reality is irrelevant. Like all bigotry and divide & conquer, the perception is what matters and it is created by others, even though it does not comport with our first-hand direct interactions with each other. Destruction and divisiveness always increase in today's world...they never abate. It makes one wonder what will be blamed on other generations when those who come after them are faced with a world fashioned by corrupting outside influences.
