Many, many years ago, the first - and only - time I tried espresso, I didn't know what I was ordering. I was in my teens, and in California, having never heard of espresso while growing up in the UP of Michigan. I just thought it was another flavor of coffee. My first thought was, Why so small a cup? Then when I tasted the stuff, I almost gagged. Maybe I did gag. I know it was awful. If not on a dare, why would anyone drink this stuff? I was desperate to find another place where I could get a cup of something to drink that wasn't toxic. I had to get that taste out of my mouth. I didn't dare order anything from the place where I had bought the espresso because maybe all their coffee was like that. It went into the trash can and I have never again tried espresso. That's probably similar to how I felt about coffee the first time I tasted it, as a child, but I tried coffee again later, and have never again tried espresso.
LOL. I've never tasted an expresso and never thought about trying it. I just started drinking regular coffee last year only because my left a container when he moved. Espresso is a concentrated shot of coffee, much stronger than your average cup of black coffee. Espresso drinks are generally stronger and give a greater rush of energy and alertness than normal coffee. (Google) Hahahaha...what kind of rush did you get, @Ken Anderson?
Like Von, I've never tried it. Even when I drink regular coffee black at a restaurant I usually water it down some. Probably that's because at most places I eat out the coffee is not always that fresh.
I sort of remember the one and only time I had one. My son ordered one for me. I had never had one, had heard of the name, but never tried one. It was in the late Nineties. My first reaction was, 'this is not coffee.' My second thought was, 'what a waste of money!' Aways done my own ordering since.
I have, like Ken, tried it and detested it at once. I have a friend who just adores her espresso machine. Forget it. I do like a cappuchino though.
it's the only coffee my husband will drink, nothing else is strong enough for him... he drinks one cup a day or in Spain he'll drink one in the morning and one accompanied by a straight brandy , in the afternoon..
I have it occasionally at my daughter's house. My son-in-law has an espresso machine and makes it, though I'd rather have a plain coffee. Of course I lived in Baton Rouge for several years, where the French roast coffee will eat a hole in your clothes if you spill it on yourself.
For ladies to fully enjoy Espresso, you would have to be wearing a Black Leotard, be Barefooted, have No Hairdo and no Makeup, and be playing Bongos while listening to a Lawrence Ferlinghetti poem in a Coffee House in a Poor District, recited by a sick-looking guy playing One Chord all night on a Guitar. I had it once and that was more than enough for me. The taste was nasty ! Even worse was how jittery I felt after consuming it. It boggled my mind how such a wee tiny little cup of that stuff could make me feel so awful.
