I don't think that people's behaviour should be controlled, but I gotta say that restricting the places that people can smoke (and I think we all grew up where there were no such restrictions) has likely saved lives, and has imposed a disruption to the cycle that enabled some to quit.
I can remember riding in the car with my parents both smoking and all the windows rolled up. They both lived to their late 70's. My mother died of kidney disease and my father died of melanoma. My grandpa was a pipe smoker and I can still remember the sweet smell of that tobacco in their house and on him when I gave him a hug.
Only my father smoked, but he smoked (unfiltered) all the time. I've mentioned many time the 3 male relatives dying of lung cancer at 53/55/60 years of age. So much of this is genetic. And I'm not sure what I believe regarding second hand smoke.
Back in the day, my dad probably used enough chemicals as a farmer to make him glow in the dark. I think smoking was the least of his worries.
