This song has always meant a lot to me. As this year goes on, I find myself singing it more and more often. Anyone else have a favorite patriotic song, whether America or your own country?

We always sang this in school after the Pledge of Allegiance.

I was hoping someone would put this one on, @Chrissy Page ... it means a lot to me, too... actually I need to start a 9-11 thread with "my story." Or most likely there is already one started. It's in the category with "Where were you when JFK...."

I don't think so. In fact, I went to a public school and if I recall we either said the Lord's Prayer or had a moment of silent prayer later in HS. @Bonnie Thomas

I'm not even sure they say the pledge of allegiance anymore. Will ask the 12 yr old later.

I don't think they do any of it any longer, either. 1500 children saying the pledge or having a "moment of silent prayer" like we did may offend the 2 or 3 students of a different culture is the excuse. But golly gee whiz, if those 2 or 3 would want to add something from their own culture to the curriculum, everyone would bend over backwards.

Probably best not to get me going on this one.

Also, in HS if you weren't into praying, you didn't have to...you could think whatever you wanted for that minute.

What is wrong with a moment of silence? Nobody gets feelings hurt, everybody is happy. Nobody is forcing anybody.....PC has gone overboard and that is the main problem.

Exactly! That's what made sense... not the garbage thinking they turned into now. And it's mostly since 9-11... so we get attacked and suddenly we're kissing .... uh... MARI !!!! Behave yourself immediately!

Nothing's wrong with it... just like nothing's wrong with "Merry Christmas"... that has to be the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. Newsflash... I have Jewish friends who don't mind hearing it a bit. Goodness.

One of my favorites, which we even sang in church, was "God Bless America". It was written by Irving Berlin, and first performed by Kate Smith, around 1938, I think.
There are many great versions of this song, and this one is just a little different; but I enjoyed listening to it, and I believe some of the rest of you will enjoy it, too.
There are a lot of familiar faces singing this song, and narrated by John Wayne........a man who believed in America with his whole heart.

Ah yes... they sure don't make 'em like John Wayne any more, do they? :(

I always liked that one, @Bonnie Thomas ... sure was timely. And working in the music business, I saw that just about every songwriter was frantically writing their feelings out in songs hoping to get airtime. Few did, but none I heard whether they made it or not, were as good as Alan's.
