From what we both remember, we've never had a gas stove, only electric.

Whenever we have a (one) gas burner on, it heats up the entire top of the stove. Whenever the one is turned off, the stove can still be hot.

Before moving here, we bought three new 8 inch Teflon skillets on Amazon. Each one has a metal handle that is suppose to be "heat resistant". After I finished using one, I shut off the gas burner and put it on the rear burner that was off and I hadn't even used. For some reason, I wanted to put that skillet back on the front burner. Picked it up from the rear burner, with nothing it in, and immediately dropped it on the floor. The handle burned my hand! Not a bad burn, but ran cold water over the red area and sprayed with Solarcaine Burn Relief w/ Cool Aloe. Also put some CBD Salve on the area. This happened last week, but now the hand is fine.

This never happened once with an electric stove! My wife told me, "No more gas stoves!"

Then, last night I was baking a pork chop (Shake N Bake) and had turned on the oven light. After the pork chop was done and I had shut off the oven, I went to turn off the oven light (push thing) and it was totally hot. Had to wait until that cooled down to shut off the oven light. However, shutting off the oven was ok. That (push thing) wasn't hot at all.

    Thoughts?

I wouldn't have a gas stove if somebody gave me a brand new one. I'd trade it in on a good used electric stove. :)

In return, I hate electric stoves but that said, you have to learn what you’re dealing with if you’ve never used a gas stove.
*note: Nearly All commercial kitchens use gas ovens and stoves so when you’re enjoying that nice steak, it was cooked over a gas flame.*

I don’t know what kind of gas unit you have so it’s tricky to give you any ideas. Some gas stoves are just gas stoves whilst others employ some electronics in the mix.
As a suggestion Cody, get some instructions like going to YouTube to see some demonstrations on things like lighting the oven when the pilot goes out for instance.

In the mean time, get some hot pads that fit the handles of your skillets and learn NEVER to put the handles over another eye even if it is off. You have to remember that the pilot light is always on unless ya have one of the new-fangled ones that use electronics to light the burner.

Never had any problems like that with ours, @Cody Fousnaugh. We have had both gas and electric, but opted for gas when the electric stove that came with the house died. Gas is far better for canning, and some solid top electrics recommend not using them for canning at all. We do a LOT of canning. When you turn the "burners" off on an electric stove unless they are induction. I like electric broilers and ovens, but getting a gas stove top with and electric oven is for the pros, and is beyond my budget. My daughter in Seattle has an fancy electric stove, but has to do her canning on a gas burner on the patio/deck, as her stove specifically says not to use it for canning or for large pots or kettles. If your pan handles are getting hot, you may be using a burner that is too big for the pan, or the pan handles are cheaply made. Most modern gas stoves have one or more large burners specifically for those large pots that aren't to be used on electrics. See if there is a smaller burner.

It does sound like perhaps your stove is poorly-made, as the light switch shouldn't be hot when the oven is used. Contact a dealer about that, or the manufacturer.

The only downside I know for gas stove is that you have to have a vent to the hood that goes outside, as the burners do off-gas a bit.

When we do turn on a single burner, a "clicking" noise happens that produces the flame. Really don't know what happened the one time I burned my hand on the handle. I cook breakfast for myself each morning during the week and that was the first time I burned my hand. Sometimes the skillet handles can get a little warm, but not like it did that morning.

But, did notice that when we use either the broiler or the oven, of which both are heated up with an open flame, both the open-flame burner area and the area where the digital push-buttons are (on/off, temperature setting, etc.) can be very hot.

The clicking noise is the electronic ignition.
From my understanding you have a gas stove but you also have a bunch of electronics if the thing is digital. For me, there’s too many parts that can go kaput just like an electric stove and oven.

Just gimme a plain gas oven and stove. The only things that can go wrong with them is when the pilot goes out or a thermostat or thermocouple needs replacing.

All that said, you rent an apartment so if something goes bad or needs to be fixed, you don’t have to pay for it.

    Me thinks you’re right.
When I think of rodeo, I think of cowboys and campfires and that leads to wood burning stoves and that leads to gas stoves.
Nowhere in the mix is an electric anything much less an electric stove.

Yup. I was gonna post something about "outfits" as a test.
    No Reaction = Hijacked Account.

All joking aside, I've had gas stoves in every place I've ever lived (I've had propane tanks installed specifically to avoid electric stoves), and I've never had the entire stove top get hot from one burner (or even from all burners) being lit. I cannot think of how the burners could heat the entire stove top, even with a cheap stove.

I think the hot skillet handle thing was merely conducted heat from its recent use. "Heat resistant" handles mean that they are oven-safe, not that they don't get hot. The funny thing is that it's electric coils that retain heat after they're turned off...shutting off the gas is instantaneous.

Cody needs to set up a Zoom Meeting with his stove so we can figure this out.

I also have had gas stoves for much of my life and second John's remarks, you took the words out of my mouth John!

As a bit of an aside the stove I currently have is one designed for use where there is no hydro and does not need hydro to light the oven or have the need to have a pilot light on all the time, its all lit by a battery operated spark ignition. It has no clocks, timers of 'extras' just a simple gas stove that works without the need for hydro..... I love it!

    What is "hydro," Don?

I replaced an old gas stove that I made some great food on solely because it was small...it was something that belonged in a trailer. Not only does it have the igniters, but it has the clock and electronic thermostat and oven igniter. The problem is that you cannot use the oven during a power outage (not that those are frequent.) So while I don't have a pilot light to mess with, unless I find some sort of battery backup to power the electronics, I can't bake without electricity.

If I had realized this, I would have purchased a used legacy model (and dealt with the cracking Bakelite knobs.)

Hydro, the common name here for the 110 / 220v electricity from the power grid

Not going to start a new thread over this, but, has anyone ever lived somewhere where all of the drawers/cupboards had no handles/knobs to open them with? This is a total first for us and, pretty annoying. So, so much easier to simply pull a handle or knob to open drawers/cupboards.

We know what an "igniter" is. We had three of them on our last propane gas grill. But, on the grill, if the flame didn't start right away, a person had to keep turning the burner dial on and off to "reignite" the burner flame. On the stove, once the dial is turned, the "igniter" keeps clicking until the flame starts.
