Happy Thanksgiving! We no longer cook Thanksgiving Dinner. We go out. But, any leftovers, go home and we have a second Thanksgiving Dinner the next day. Have bought a few items for that "after-Thanksgiving" dinner.
We are doing a delayed Thanksgiving until after my daughter comes over from the Netherlands in December, so today is pretty casual for us. I put some pork chops and stuffing in the crockpot, and am making a chocolate fiber cake, and the temperature is even warm enough here to have the heat off and the doors open to air out the house for a while today. Wishing everyone here on the forum a wonderful holiday, however you are celebrating it !
Wonder how I can be on the computer so much today? I peel slice and put the rutabagas on to boil--and then need to sit down. I set up the stuffing, peel the potatoes and put in water--then need to sit down. I went down the basement to get the cranberry sauce and mandarin oranges. Don't need to sit down, I'm just doing it And don't worry; made pies yesterday. Yes, I put the turkey in the oven. Not sure if we need the asparagus with what my daughter is bringing. Oh heck, I'll sit down anyway. Someone ate the eggs this morning and went through the barn garbage. I am saving the turkey gizzard for the trap for whomever it was. Thanksgiving is very useful
We are going over to my son’s place tomorrow (they are living at Robin’s house since she is in the Netherlands). I am in the process of getting the turkey and stuffing made and ready to start cooking first thing in the morning. My daughter-in-law is making everything else (salad, cranberries, potatoes, pie, etc), so all I have to do is make the turkey. We have an electric turkey roaster, and that is what i have used forever, and also what my mother used to cook the turkey with back in the 50’s when I was growing up. The one I have now (walmart special) is basically the same thing that my mom used 60 years ago. You do not get that crispy brown skin like with an oven, but the turkey comes out very tender and delicious. Wishing everyone here a wonderful Thanksgiving, however you celebrate it ! !
Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! We're having TG dinner at my sister-in-law's home tomorrow. I just made a coconut cake and the cranberry sauce. Tomorrow morning I'll make mashed potatoes and a side dish of corn. Enjoy your day.
A woman I used to attend church with always has a large crowd, so she uses the church's kitchen and fellowship hall to host her meal. Somehow I got on her invitation list a few years ago and she's not scratched me off. There will be a couple of other "extended family" like me there that I know, in addition to her family that I've become acquainted with over the years.
Really great for you. No clean up! Only my 2 unmarried kids will be coming this year. I am sure that if I HAD any friends, they would like me But everyone chose their families.
I have always tended to be a loner, so holidays are when Reality and Expectations clash. Regarding clean up...I can never stand around and just do nothing while others work, even as an invitee to someone else's event. I'll be washing out roasting pans and wiping down tables...it's the least I can do.
When I helped cook Thanksgiving dinner in 2000, by making the mashed potatoes that everyone loved, I cut up the leftover turkey and helped my wife clean everything up. That was when her mom was still alive and we were still living in So California, had the entire family over, well those that lived in California, over. It was a great time and the meal was delicious! John, my BIL/wife's brother, is sort of like you, a loner. Back, before my wife's mom passed, he was much more "family" related, but still lived in Florida.
First, Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! We no longer cook Thanksgiving dinner at home. Just too much work. This year, we have made reservations online to a beautiful steakhouse at a truck stop casino/hotel. They will be serving a full Thanksgiving dinner. Have never ate there, but it really reminds me of eating in the High-Class Dining Area on the Titanic. The seating, white table clothes and beautiful interior. And, of course, we will both be dressed western, including our black felt hats. However, I will be wearing my sport coat, dress shirt/tie and Wrangler jeans on both of us. IOW, we just can't give up that "western" look!
