In 1970, the big budget film Tora Tora Tora was released. It is the story of how America came to be involved in World War 2, in the Pacific, against the Japanese Empire. Japan had invaded mainland China and was bombing dozens of cities, killing tens of thousands of civilians. Especially barbaric was the "Rape of Nanking". In response, President Roosevelt told the Japanese, "Either withdraw all your military from China OR we will stop selling you oil, scrap metal and other goods. Japan had next to no natural resources and it depended upon America for 85% of its oil. When Japan ignored FDR, the President also froze all of Japans finances which were held by America. Still, Japan refused to leave China. What happened next, is the main story of how Pearl Harbor came to be attacked. If you have not seen it, I recommend Tora Tora Tora. One of the best, if not the best film about the days of WW2
Actually I saw it first release and another great War Classic same day in Baton Rouge 1976. I lived 50 miles from Baton Rouge at the time so I decided to see both movies each at a different theater because the drive home was so long. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midway_(1976_film)
Have seen it and most definitely a great movie! But, the attack on Pearl Harbor movies, named Pearl Harbon, were good also.
I like attack on Midway because I was on Midway Island in 1969 Jan returning from Christmas leave to RVN . It was not some place you would want to be with a Japanese air fleet targeting you. All the pill boxes were out in the reefs under water because the island has lost a lot of original land mass it once had 83 years ago. There were several burned out plane hulls still on the side of the runway from after WWII because there was no place to dispose of them. It has been a gas station in the Pacific since WWII for military and commercial.
