Here are some natural methods to cure hiccups, some you may be aware of while others may seem like a surprise. I know that I found them to be surprising to find out about:

A spoonful of sugar: Sugar is sweet and the grains help combat the hiccups. A glass of water can also be used as a chaser to help the sugar go down effectively.

Sugar or Honey: Both of these are sweet subestances and a spoon full of one of them can effectively cure the hiccups. A tip for those who think its a bit on the sweet side a glass of water would make a good chaser.

Vinegar: and lemon juice No not together but separately one of these could be effective in curing the hiccups. Yes, not the most pleasant stuff the drink straight, so again water could be needed as a chaser after drinking either of these.

Breathe slowly into a paper bag: This method has been used for years for hyperventilating but it can also be effective to help get rid of the hiccups.

Soda Pop: Although this one has also been documented to cause the hiccups it can also an effective way to get rid of them if a person drinks the pop slowly.

Peanut Butter: Eating a spoonful of creamy peanut butter can help stop an attack of the hiccups.

Hold breath and swallow: This is an age old cure for the hiccups. The best way to handle this method is the minute the hiccup sensation starts to come, hold your breath and swallow hard.

When I get the hiccups I take a spoonful of sugar and my family thinks I have lost my mind. It is good to see your post suggesting a spoonful of sugar, I don't know where I got the idea but it does work.

:oops:Thanks for the hiccup cure tips. It's good to know just in case it happens. Hiccups can be so exhausting! Once I was as the library this gentleman had chronic hiccups and was using the internet computers. He couldn't stop hiccupping. Someone told him to drink plenty of water. It must have worked for he stopped hiccupping and continued to use the internet computers. It's very upsetting when you've got the hiccups. I sometimes get the hiccups. It usually comes at night when I'm watching late night television. Water works for me, but I like the peanut butter cure tip too! Thanks again.

I suffocate 'em. That is, I take a deep breath and hold it as long as I can. Usually works for me. Only passed out a few times.:D

I do that too Joe! I bend over and drink from the opposite side. It always works. I think it's all in the concentration.

Scaring the hiccuping person out of his wits. Drink lots of water-careful not to drown. And your last hiccup-cure, 'holding breath and swallow'. We love Calvin and Hobbes! Yes, water in the nose scares the hiccups away, too.
