Rather than post a lot of images the entire bunch can be seen at the proper beginning. I don't have the url at the moment but you can also lookup the historical images from Rice University and University of Houston libraries for images of old Houston. One image I do want to post along with this good freeway subject, is the first known photograph of downtown Houston 1886. Probably looking Northward on Main street. I have an early 1920's image at the exact same spot but at a very slight difference in angle, the old photo still has one of the large arched buildings fronts that is the same building of 1886 in the 1920's photo. Only street level changes had been made in that 1920's photo.

I love those old photos. (not too many vintage cars in this one :D) I remember the first moving pictures of San Francisco which amazed me.
As far as more present day freeways. I am glad Governor Perry was blocked from putting in the beginning of the Mexico to Canada one.
