EV cars like Teslas caught fire and exploded as salt water got into the batteries. I have read that 'a number' of them caught fire to 'tons' of them, in news articles but they don't actually give a number.
I can’t find anything definite about this. They all seem to quote one article and it says something like “ a ton of EV’s are disabled in Florida from the hurricane” ‘ but all of the articles only show one little white car that actually had caught on fire. Another interesting thing is that the article seems to only really mention the Tesla vehicles, when we all know that there are other electric vehicles besides Tesla, so it is not going to be just one brand that catches on fire. In fact, my thought would be that most people who had paid thousands of dollars for that expensive Tesla would be sure to get both themselves and the Tesla somewhere safe before the hurricane arrived.
I saw one vid of an EV in Florida being extinguished and it was not a Tesla. The fumes are very dangerous and lithium fires are tough to put out...they almost have to just burn themselves out. It's not a reaction to saltwater...any flood will do it. And any brand of EVs/lithium batteries are at risk. Recall the spate of laptop fires on airplanes? Those were lithium batteries as well. I guess they're not very stable.
A few years ago, Samsung phones and tablets were catching fire. If I remember correctly, it was Samsung.
What I would far most would be the failure of the grid and the inability to fuel you EV. If you are just arriving home with a depleted battery and find the grid down, you are stuck. They would be fine as "secondary" vehicles however.
I actually bought a bicycle at a rummage sale just to be sure I could make it to the farm no matter what. Will have to get a toe strap so I can peddle with one foot. Mostly going downhill. Coming back a different route, flatter.
I have now seen two ships transporting cars catch fire and burn in as many weeks allegedly due to EVs catching fire on the ships.
Yup. Just like wind turbines slaughtering endangered species. Both would bring massive fines and calls for "ending the industry" if they were done by those who are in disfavor. (I need to program a couple of hot keys with some preset righteous indignation in order to implement my own energy conservation program )
