Well, in a word..........inhospitably! Regular use vehicle out of commission while I delve into it's wiring harness, so we have been using the old pickup, 27 years old. Here's the first-mentioned: Returning from Laughlin this afternoon, using the pickup, temp. gauge seemed too hot. My wife has been claiming she hears a belt squealing for days now. Made it home, opened hood, steam pouring out! Radiator tank broke open. I had that baby out of the vehicle in 30 minutes! Not bad for an old fart!
It gives me shivers whenever I would hear or read about a car being repaired. I hate to see a car with an open hood because to me, it signifies a problem. It is big deal to us and a car needing repairs, whether with the engine or the body, truly gives us stress. And it's a good thing that we bought a brand new car that gave us worry-free driving for 3 years except for a small dent caused by my bad driving in the car park of our office, That small dent costs us $400 which luckily was shouldered by the insurance company (although we had a minimal share in the expense).
In 1975 I bought a Chrysler Cordoba for $3,500. I drove that same car until it was stolen in 2010. I loved that car. My mechanics were my husband and my sons, so other than paying for maintenance materials and parts, that car cost me a $100. a year. You can't do that with today's cars.
I had a Holden Nova for almost 18 years ...which was made by Toyota,( exactly the same as a Toyota Corolla ) I sold it because it had traveled 300.000 km ..and the I'm still sorry I did ...the car I bought to replace it has cost me heaps of my money in repairs ..where I never spent a cent on the nova for the whole 18 years I had it My hubs is a mechanic so I've never had to put my car into a shop to be fixed ..I've just spent quite a bit on my present car and its still playing up ..so it's on it's last warning or it will be going to the car auction
We have a 2002 Explorer much like yours Frank. We bought it in August of 2001 and it still has less than 80,000 miles. I had a 2003 Ford F150 with less than 90,000 miles but had to sell it because it was a standard shift I couldn't drive it any more because of my knee. I bought a 2000 Ford Ranger with twice as many miles but it's an automatic. We haven't had any major problems with any of them.
As for me I gave up driving 4 years now in 2012. Relinquished my license already. Sold my car over a decade ago. Fees goes up, cars cost too much until this year. Saw the sale for KIA cars and it goes for 89.00 month...guess this doesn't include license and other fees. But gas is high so I guess I can live without a car. In case of emergencies like evacuation the bus.org has buses that pick up on main highways people needing to have a ride to the shelters. My cousin, bless him, he said he'll help us so give him a call. He doesn't live too near to us, but it's so nice to have a cousin like that. I am getting a lot done this week. Mother is applying for Medicaid integration and looks like she'll be enrolled which will help with some big time expenses like long term care that her employment benefits does not cover. Shared the information with our neighbor who has the same benefits as my Mom, she was so relieved to know that she could get Medicaid integration with Medicare. My other neighbor went blind recently and I got some information that was so helpful to them at the Senior Fair we have every Sept. We are getting older now and we need all the help we can get. Found some good sales for Safeway Friday's like 2/$5 Ore-Ida frozen fried potatoes! So this week is going rather well for us. Just wish Mom hadn't spots in her lungs we got to go see her surgeon about.
@Krissttina Isobe where do you go to when hurricanes come your way? When I need to leave because of such weather I go North West as far as needed. But you're on an island, what do the people there do, and where do you go? Do you just get as high as you can, or what. Now that would frighten me badly. Sorry, I'm totally off topic, but I just had to ask her.
Hi Ina...when there is a hurricane or adverse weather we wait and watch the news to see if we have to evacuate. Usually we don't have to evacuate. If we do we have a plan. We have no car, so we have to ride the evacuation bus. We have to wait on the main highway which is about a half a block away from us. We wave down a bus and go to shelters. We have no pets so that's one less worry. My cousin and we got to talking about it, though he doesn't live near by, he offered to take us to the shelter too for my Mom is frail. It's a good idea to speak with relatives for help too. We started talking about it when the last hurricane was stirring. My cousin takes my Mom and I to all her doctor appointments and we discuss things. He said give him a call if we need him. He is a comfort to my Mom and I.(We pray very hard too so things stay okay & safe.)
