Basically haven't gone anywhere since 2004 what with my wife's medical problems. Got a son and his son in PA and daughter in TEXAS, and a son in GA, plus a bunch of nieces in GA.
Do it! Maine to GA (or even PA to GA) would be quite the haul. I've done DC to Atlanta in a single drive...I believe it was 11 or 13 hours, something like that. Or would you be taking some form of transport?
How wonderful that you can travel. Get out, travel, enjoy the sites and have great visits with family and friends. Don't forget to add to this thread so those of us that can't travel far can travel along vicariously.
My preferred method of travel is my 2017 Ford Fusion. The son who live in PA is a 7 hour drive. He used to come up for a 3-3 hour visit and go back home same day. MY son from GA came to my daughter's funeral and went home after service. I figure I'll do a week-end to PA then later do trip to TEXAS(@Beth Gallagher
That sounds like a plan, Al. When we travel, I prefer to drive but we've given up on pushing it too far on any one day, and call it quits about 4:00 pm each day. If I were going alone, I'd probably drive at night and sleep during the day, however. My wife doesn't like driving at night.
When we had traveled before we dove at night stopped for a nap then went the rest of the way during daylight
The trip to PA will probably start Friday after lunch so that I get there about 7. Then I'll leave there Sunday after lunch to head home
I've always preferred driving at night. Not only is it easier on my eyes, but (assuming people have their headlights on) the other vehicles are easier to see...they cannot blend into the background. So are you gonna be posting here when you're on the road, Al, or will you be off the air till you return home?
Yeh, I've logged on here from my phone to kill time when taking friends to doctor appointments. If I were you, I wouldn't punish myself You can tell us all about it when you get back.
Check in's sound wonderful and maybe a photo now and then. I admire all of you that can night drive. I cannot even ride in a car at night without my head suffering motion and distance misjudgments and seeing apparitions. When I could travel, my favorite was leaving at 1 AM and driving till 3 PM. Those early morning hours watching dawn unfold still bring back memories.
I agree with everyone..........do it! My wife doesn't like driving at night at all, so, for short distances, I drive. We have never drove all night to anywhere. When we rented a car and went to Dodge City, Kansas last August (2021), I drove the entire way from our apartment. We left at 8:30AM, stopped for a short breakfast and gas, and was in Dodge City by 3PM. We seen a lot of cattle feed lots, corn fields and farm equipment while in Kansas. Very, very interesting scenery to us. When we returned home, wife drove part of the way. Bottom Line here: Just be careful. Many young folks on freeways and streets drive 15 to 20 mph over the speed limit. Our freeway speed limit here is 75mph, so, add on 15 to 20 mph on to that. IOW, very fast-moving traffic!
If you are talking about traveling in the very near future, be advised that there is still a lot of snow and ice from the recent storm along the roads. It melts during the day and runs onto the the road and freezes after the sun goes down causing slippery spots. Same with parking lots etc. Make sure your windshield washer is full and works too.
