Interesting maps and info on what indigenous nations were where in this country. Biden apparently had some recognition ceremony lately.
My daughter and her friend find all sorts of artifacts on his land and along our ledge here in NE Wisconsin. He is an native artist.

Seems like the Palestinians are not recognized as indigenous concerning what is now called Israel.

Aren't indigenous people Native Americans? So, where in the heck did the word "indigenous" come from?? There is a small Indian Pow-Wow going on this weekend near us, but the city is calling it an Indigenous Celebration. Think way too many things are being changed in America today!

originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native:

However, the term lacks a single, authoritative definition and can be used to describe a variety of peoples and cultures.

It comes from the Latin word, "Indigena" which means native.

Here is a (thumbnail) map of the United States, showing which tribes of Indians were in each area of the country.

I think that it is wrong to change the customs that have been in place for so many years.
Indians have always called their get-together a PowWow, and to call it an “indigenous celebration” might be politically correct nowdays, but it steals the legacy of the Native American people, just like so many other politically correct things have done to other races or nationalities of people.

Indigenous is an umbrella term applied to the first people living in a particular part of the world, and can be applied to the aboriginal people of Australia, Native Americans, First Nations people, Native Mexicans, and so on.

Native American is correct for anyone, of any race or ethnicity, born in the USA. While indigenous is more correct to describe the American Indian, it is much too generic for most USA tribes. As has already been posted on this thread, most countries have an indigenous people that refers to them being the original or first people known to a country.

Many USA tribes follow the lead of the Choctaw in their insistence on being referred to by tribe. If tribal affiliation is unknown then the correct term and choice of the tribes, especially Choctaw and Chickasaw, is American Indian. Choctaw, say calling them Native is taking away their individual identity. They are the Choctaw first, American Indian second, Native American third.

Years ago, one young Choctaw man that was born in Ireland while his folks were living there, made the statement that he wasn't Native American but Choctaw American Indian by blood, and native Irish by birthplace since both his folks were full blood Choctaw.

The term Indian came from the early world explorers that thought the tribes looked like the people of India, thus the term Indian. It isn't derogatory. It was made derogatory by Hollywood, like so many good descriptive terms.

All this political, so called, correctness takes away from individual identity. Instead of Indigenous Lands, try Tribal Lands and breaking it down today to reservations, some of which weren't even occupied by the tribes that were moved there in the great relocation.

@Mary Stetler Biden had a recognition ceremony? Who hosted it, Elizabeth Warren? Did Biden shake hands with the ancient ancestors of the tribes? He does have that ability, you know hahaha! Cheif Joseph of the Nez Perce once said about a two-faced president, "Sometimes big name stand on small legs." He would have to rephrase that for Biden, "Sometimes big name can't stand on small legs."

Sometimes big name crawls on belly.
    Interesting info.
However I was at an outdoor woman's conference and during archery talked to an indigenous descendant. She agreed with a young Apache man I had met working at the Grande Canyon tourist center (who married my niece) who said that if they were to meet each other, they would ask which nation they belonged to, not which tribe.

This, in red, is true. We were at South Point Hotel/Casino the day after the INFR (Indian National Finals Rodeo) was there and I talked to the Uncle (who was Navajo) of a contestant. I asked him "do all tribes participate in this rodeo?" and he said "yes, all Nations do".

Many nations now include several tribes and so many tribes are mixed blood. Here the American Indians call their "nation" the Confederated Tribes and it consist of several reservations. The Navajo like to use nation since they are so large and on one huge rez. The Apache have several reservations and so many branches of Apache, so some call it the Apache Nation to include all Apache. Interesting that the Apache's are connected by language which is similar to the Navajo.

Different tribes of Apache's usually differ in their government. The Mescalero government might differ from the Plains Apache government. It was the 19th century before the Mescalero of the Southwest, allowed other tribes of Apache's to stay on their Rez. Comanches were once called Apache's by some because of their fierce warriors that were like the Mescalero. This confusion was later cleared up because they didn't speak the Apache language and were enemies.

At one time, the Comanches nearly wiped out the Mescalero Apache of the Southwest. The Mescalero survived because they friended the Spaniards in Mexico and the Spanish troops took the Comanches down reducing their numbers. My study of American Indian history reveals that the Comanches really didn't have any friends. They were always raiding neighboring tribes and stealing horses.

In 1968 the Indian movement was founded in the USA and they agreed to use the term, American Indian to describe themselves. From that grew the movement to call American Indian tribes and reservations as nations. I think that came about in the 1980s.

Many Indian Chief's agree that using the term "American Indian" while a misnomer, is vital to keeping their culture and history. Native American or Indigenous steals away much of their sacred culture and identity. All this nonsense about political correctness, is an attempt to erase real American Indian history.

That agrees with my post about the big tribes like the Navajo and Cherokee referring to their people as a nation instead of a tribe. Had you talked to an uncle of an Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Sioux, or Crow, the reply would have been, yes all tribes are included.

Here is the breakdown from the INFR and notice all but the Navajo and Cherokee identify as a tribe. Note that the Navajo and Cherokee dominate because they are the largest of the tribes.

    • All Around Cowboy: Hiyo Yazzie, Navajo Nation
    • All Around Cowgirl: Tara Seaton, Navajo Nation
    • Bareback: Evan Betony, Navajo Nation
    • Ladies Breakaway: Janae Todacheenie, Navajo Nation
    • Ladies Barrel Racing: Graysen O'Connor, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe
    • Steer Wrestling: Tydon Tsosie, Navajo Nation
    • Tie Down: Dontre' Goff, Cherokee Nation
    • Team Roping, Header: They Begay, Navajo Nation
    • Team Roping, Heeler: Dennison Boone, Navajo Nation

    INFR Jr./Sr. World Champions
    • Jr. Bull Riding: Royd Billie, Navajo Nation
    • Jr. Breakaway: Tanner Not Afraid, Crow Tribe
    • Jr. Barrel Racing: Graysen O'Connor, Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe
    • Sr. Breakaway: Alfred Armajo, Jr., Arapahoe Tribe
    • Sr. Team Roping, Header: Jimmy Roper, Cherokee Nation
    • Sr. Team Roping, Heeler: Ralph Williams, Cherokee Nation

And, I remember seeing part of a cable program about teen Indian boys and crime on the Reservation. One teen was holding a handgun and stated "we are the new warriors". IOW, Indian/Native American/Tribes/Nations gangs.

That would be American Indian gang or gangs, not tribal or that of a nation. To say tribal or nations gangs, would infer that the tribal government or Indian Nation was sponsoring gang activity.

Preferred names will vary from nation to nation, tribe to tribe, and from individual to individual. When someone from outside of the group says, "They like to be called..." the chances are that someone is going to feel alienated.
