Nice, eh? The hypocrits in charge make homeowners undo or pay fine, for graffiti they had nothing to do with, except be together. Sickening example, to me, of how our "leaders" "solve" problems in their jurisdictions. "An interracial Connecticut couple refuses to cover up a racial slur that was spray painted on their garage door until authorities conduct a thorough investigation – even though the “blight” is costing them a $100-a-day fine. The N-word was written on the couple’s garage door over the Martin Luther King holiday weekend, but so far, no one has been arrested for the crime, according to the Stamford Advocate." http://nypost.com/2017/02/21/racist-vandalism-is-costing-victims-100-per-day/#.
This is a problem that needs some common sense. When a kid is caught tagging or vandalizing property, it would make more sense to sentence the bratt to cleaning up any vandalism in the community. Instead of probation, or a few months in jail, where they'll just learn worse offenses, if the kid had to spend his weekends cleaning up what other offenders have gotten away with, I bet they wouldn't find it so much fun anymore. Whatever length of probation, or jail time a judge would apply should be the length of repairing the vandalism
I don't think I'd want any vandal in or near my house, if we had a house. Someone would have to stay close to the kid to make sure they don't do any other vandal or criminal thing. I'd rather have the Justice System take care of their crime.
Yes, that definitely should be investigated by the authorities. I think I read that they are in foreclosure so I'm sure they're not worried about the $100 a day charge. I'd take a pic and remove it though....everybody has seen it
Removing it promptly is a good idea as that type of thing could spur on a copycat to do the same to another couple.
There is nothing in the story to incidate that this was done by an adolescent and not an adult, as far as I can see. I can understand the people living in the house not wanting this to just be ignored by the police; but on the other hand, police have much more important things to do than hunt down graffiti writers, racist or not. It looks to me like they are making a much bigger issue of this than it needs to be, and that they actually have the support of most of the neighborhood residents; but painting over it would be the best way to continue to keep that support. The article says that they have already involved the NAACP, so I think that they want to make something out of this, rather than just painting it over and going on with their lives, which is what most of us would do if someone wrote this kind of slur on our property. If turns out to have been a nearby homeowner, there will probably be a lawsuit, and the fines they are being charged would then be part of what they are asking for as restitution. Since the police already offered to repaint the door for free, and the owners refused to agree to that, the fine seems legitimate to me.
