Well, isn't this special. ARTICLE A state judge in Massachusetts was indicted Thursday for refusing to allow ICE to take custody of an undocumented immigrant, according to court papers. Judge Shelley M. Richmond Joseph, 51, of Natick, was charged in the case along with a court officer, Wesley MacGregor, 56, of Watertown. In court on Thursday, the judge and court officer were released after appearing. The undocumented immigrant is in deportation hearings but not in custody and “The allegations in today’s indictment involve obstruction by a sitting judge, that is intentional interference with the enforcement of federal law, and that is a crime," said U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling. "We cannot pick and choose the federal laws we follow, or use our personal views to justify violating the law." On April 2, 2018, a plainclothes ICE officer came to the district court in Newtown to take custody of the suspect and was told to wait in the lobby. But during the course of the proceedings, Joseph allegedly arranged for the suspect, his lawyer and an interpreter, to leave through a different exit, escorted by MacGregor.
I hope the state of Massachusetts will do the right thing and remove that "judge" from the bench. State judges can be impeached and removed from office by their state legislatures. If the state House of Representatives votes to impeach the judge, the state Senate holds the trial and decides whether the judge should be removed.
I read about that a few days ago.. that Judge and court officer have to be taken to task, and certainly be removed from the bench , this is a serious breach of security
From the looks of things, she’s a pretty compassionate person but she failed to separate that compassion with the law of the land. It wouldn’t be so bad if she wasn’t a sitting judge who passes judgment on a myriad of issues for or against a myriad of people based on the law but she is and then broke the very laws she took an oath to protect. I understand when an individual American might not drop a dime on their new non-English speaking neighbor but a judge sworn to uphold the law? How the heck did she think she was going to get away with it? Did she think that her position was so high that she would not be prosecuted if she was caught? Maybe under the Obama regime but under the present administration, some of these judges who make up their own laws as they go are on their way to extinction.
This is a real problem in the world today... people in positions of trust are abusing their power and are finally being taken to task for it. No one is above the law. Though I'm sure similar abuses of power have gone on for years.
He was here illegally, was arrested for selling drugs and had been deported twice already. But...… her prosecution is, "Absolutely political." Must be President Trump's fault. Poor dear, I suppose she will walk. Don't you?
I predict she won't even be censured. Interest will die down and it will be swept under the lumpy rug. It's getting pretty crowded under there.
This is odd. Can you allow the freedom of an individual against the Common Law of the Land not to go before a court to answer. TV stations should not be the ones to answer
Many of us would like the answer to that, Tom. Seems like laws and the Constitution are merely "suggestions" nowadays.
We have just had a case like that in the UK. https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/mp-who-lied-police-avoid-13811006 She got a prison sentence served 2 months and was subject to a recall which she lost. Also there is a possibility she will be disbarred as a Lawyer. All over a speeding charge. The arrogance of some people is mind blowing.
