Before I go into my story and I truly believe a "clean out" left me worse off when UCLA surgeons did this
in 2017. Long story and all stems from hip replacement surgery in 2010. All connected. shorter leg outcome and walking on a messed up knee for a couple yrs....

Did anyone have a "clean out" with good results.

Here is one link about the "job". Some info on what is done:

Arthroscopic knee surgery is usually performed so as to clean and tidy up the internal knee joint. Nothing is actually repaired. Meaning that they will generally cut out bits of the knee cartilage that are suspected of causing the knee pain.))))

One article I read says that most are successful and 1% or so are left with issues, swelling, stiffness and the removal of good cartilage So in cleaning out the knee, good stuff is taken out too. I believe that is
    what I'm living with.

I almost had the surgery. Torn meniscus in left knee from a car accident. Very slow to get any better. Would get aggravated climbing stairs and ladders for several years.

I happened to mention this to my doctor. X-rays taken. He strongly encouraged me to get arthroscopic surgery to smooth the edges of the cartilage. It was an easy operation, he said. Will fix it right up. I put it off. It wasn't that bad.

A year later when I saw him he said he changed his mind. Don't get the surgery until you can't stand the pain anymore. I didn't ask why.

It doesn't bother me at all now. In fact the right knee is more likely to cause trouble. Dodged a bullet, for the time being, anyway. Sometimes it pays to procrastinate.

Sorry to hear another victim of medical treatment. Joy I hope you get better real soon, all I have is good thoughts and prayers for all of us. I'm not a real religious person but do believe in God.

Oh Marie, it's been over 5 yrs since the "clean out" or tidy up as the info says. I'd have to really be BORN AGAIN big time to be healed.....

And yes Nancy many knee issues do heal themselves, but in my case it's a complex issue and I was in the hospital with the knee infection issue and then was given 2.5 months of IV abx drip and then the UCLA docs just wheeled me down to do a clean out....damage is so done....

I forgot to put your name in my reply. And I hope you heal too, last few days I've been more forgetful than usual which was bad enough.

Nancy Hart: On your doc's comments about surgery a year later, what I thought could have happened for him to say that, is that he may have plenty of patients who have had issues from the "clean out" and they complained plenty to him so he kinda changed his position. I'm absolutely sure the surgeons who do the replacement surgeries get MANY comments and complaints from their patients, good and NOT GOOD.

And as in my case, my issues took over 5 months to SHOW UP and show up they did. That was the hip replacement.

Could be. His specialty is supposed to be geriatrics. Probably does see a lot of patients with knee and hip problems. He is rather young and still reads current research articles. Those results can be contradictory sometimes also.

I'm sorry you had to go through all this, Joy.

Me too Nancy, but it seemed to be the answer back in 2010...and now I wonder if it was, and I'll never know.

Doctors are the cheerleaders, they do the cutting and we go home and face what we have to heal. They tell their patients, "you will be fine" blah blah and so many are not fine. b
