My wife's kin have never really accepted me, even after 37 years. No surprise there. I don't blindly support the Democratic Party, own guns, swear a lot (according to them), and whisked their little relative away from Churubusco, Indiana, clear across the country! Wife's two sisters, their Mother, now 90, still live back home in IN.

About a month ago, wife announced a new diet. Surprisingly, her younger sister Betsy, (they relate back & forth on Facebook), decided to try it, too. Low carbs, low as possible, which means no sugar, no fruit with sugar, as well as no carbs. They have stuck to it religiously, apparently, my wife measuring weights of everything, making up unorthodox concoctions like "Fat Bombs", Fake Pizza, Flatbread containing only eggs, fake ice cream made of Cream Cheese and Stevia, etc. She claims she is allowed any amount of fat and protein. She has lost 7 lbs. Really needs to lose more. Falls asleep better, has no more craving for sweets.

Betsy has lost 20 lbs! She is, however, almost twice wife's size, same height. I would love to congratulate her, but it's risky. See, I don't fit in back there too well.

My problem with dieting is the deprivation of delicious foods particularly the sweets. Take for example rice, I was once prescribed to eat brown rice instead of white since brown rice is more nutritious. But the taste of brown rice is not agreeable to my taste buds. Cake and pastries are my comfort food so I feel deprived if I cannot have those on occasions. Well, I really believe that life is short so might as well enjoy it while we're still alive.

Sounds like the Atkins diet but there are also many versions of it so don't know what diet your wife is on.

I prefer South Beach or the 17 day diet because when I did Atkins it was too strict. 20g carbs a day is not much.

And if you are really counting, it's very difficult. I forget what some of the things that added 1-2 carbs to a dish were

But they were really just something like spices etc.

I hate diets that are overly strict like that. They may work, but the torture they inflict is not worth it. I prefer more sensible alternatives like Weight Watchers which works, and doesn't turn your whole life upside down. I was on the 20/20 diet for about a month, and that was total torture. I did not lose all that much weight on it either. No Thanks, I will stick to something that works..and doesn't make me feel like I am in a Nazi Concentration Camp.

Two of my cousins are are on Atkins and have done well. My cousin with diabetes has been able to get off of her insulin. Atkins can be really helpful for some people.
